insulin resistant 10 year old son

by sheilahm, Aug 27, 2007 12:00AM
My son is 10 years old.He is insulin resistant and has been taking 1000 mg of Glucophage a day for about 2 years. My question is his lab results are creatinine 0.6(low), protein, serum 6.0(low) and his ALK PHOS is 199.0(high) what could be causing this. He has not taken Glucophage for about 2 weeks now, his doctor wanted to do lab tests. His insulin and glucose levels were in the normal range.PLEASE HELP!

We are not doctors here, and so cannot give you all of the possible scenarios that can cause these numbers to be off -- we just are not trained to do diagnostics. I did some searching on the web, however, and all sorts of possibilities came up. Our levels of all of these elements are so complexly balanced in the human body that it doesn't take much to cause them to be out of the normal range. The good news is that your son seems to be keeping his glucose levels down without the Glucophage. I would ask his doctor why these numbers that you list seem to be off, and ask him to test to see if anything is wrong. This website is primarily for type 1 diabetics, so the folks who monitor it are not all that familiar with type 2 drugs such as Glucophage. I would call his  pharmacist and ask if that medication can have side effects of lowering creatinine, protein, and serum while raising ALK PHOS. And make sure that his doctor takes a close look at the numbers.
