islet cell transplant

Can a living volunteer have islet cells safely removed from his own pancreas and thereby help a diabetic?

Hi tvincent!  I have done a little looking around the internet and read some about islet cells.  One of the better websites was the Mayo Clinic site.  Please check them out at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/islet-cell-transplant/DA00046.  There's reference to more than 1 donor pancreas needed to obtain the amount of islet cells needed for the transplant to be successful.  I hope this helps.
