The first big signs, well for any diabetic, are extreme thirst, excessive urination.  Your husband has the glucometer but seriously, just have your doctor run a blood sugar with regular blood work so you don't chase the kid around with a lancet. They really don't like it. Studies stay that a low fat diet and exercise is the best.  You might be the only parent that says "no" to fast food. It will help your hubbie out too. The hardest part is that if they eat healty, it helps if you do to. I don't know if it's "correct" but it sure is easier to eat right when ther are no M & Ms or Poptarts in the cupboard.
