My fyear ol d son craves sugar . He will get up in the middle of the night and eat straight out of the sugar bowl. is this a symptom of juville diabetes. Diabetes runs in our family but no one has gotten it as a child. They have all gotten it as adults. Should I take him to the doctor to get tested.

If the body is not able to appropriately use the sugars in food because it cannot produce insulin, then a craving for foods with carbohydrates can result. I would suggest that you look to see if other typical symptoms of diabetes is present: thirst, going to the bathroom an unusual amount of times, lethargy, irritability (noticed in children), 'fruity' smelling breath, sleepy, hungry all the time, and weight loss even though the child is eating a lot. If in doubt, I would certainly get him tested. Better to have the simple lab test done than to guess.

he is thristy all the time but he doesn't crave water he wants sweet drinks like juice and things like that. How often is it normal for a five year old to eat, because he does seem to want to eat all the time and we have to lock food up because he will eat all the time if we do ot. But I thought this ws common amoung young growing boys.
Thank -you for the help. I will test him with my dad's test kit. is it the same for children between 80 and 120, or is that just for adults. Is it best to test him in the morning like my dad and grandma do?

The same question as the one above was also posted as a new question on the Forum, and that's where I typed my response. Please check Message #1846 for the answer. :o)
