new regimen and gaining weight?

by jessnsteve, Oct 25, 2009 05:53AM
Okay I'm 19 been diabetic since I was 4 and and I have gained 15-20 pounds with my new insulin regimen started about 6 months ago.I take humalog on sliding scale 1 unit per 10 carbs and I take it every time I eat and I also take 50 units of lantus at bed time.So my question is can this be causing my weight gain? I think the lantus initially caused me to gain about 20lbs. to begin with 6yrs. ago and I'm now over weight.I'm on my feet constantly at work 9 hrs. a day so I don't think it is not exercising and I don't seem to be losing anything...I am trying to conceive a baby since my blood sugars are well in check now and the weight is not healthy.

What you don't say in your post is how you eat? That is what makes you gain weight, not insulin per se! Some Type 1's assume they can eat whatever they want and cover it with insulin. So they take higher doses of insulin and sometimes even have to eat more to match the insulin dose instead of the reverse. Usually Insulin Resistance is a Type II problem but Type 1's who gain weight can also develop resistance which then makes them gain more weight so it is a vicious cycle. Perhaps it would help to talk to a nutritionist about a program of weight loss and lower carbs.
