preventing diabetes type 1 to unborn child

by saipen, May 25, 2005 12:00AM
I have a sister and niece w/ type 1, a niece with Graves disease and my mom has celiac disease. Is there any research in diet, etc. which may help prevent the possibility of an autoimmune disease on to my child if I become pregnant?

At this point there has been no studies showing any kind of dietary factor in the onset or prevention of type 1 diabetes. The three diseases that you list are frequently linkied in patients with autoimmune disorders, and many people who have one of these diseases discover that they also have at least one of the other two also. It would appear that your family does carry the genes that make people prone to autoimmune disorders, and so you are smart to be asking these questions. However, there is nothing that you can do to affect which genes you pass on to a child. The cause is not diet-related in any way.
