rotator cuff surgery after a lymph node dissection

by searchforme, Sep 15, 2007 12:00AM
My girlfriend has type 2 diabetes.  In 1995 she had a partial masectomy on her left side and she had a lymph node dissection with that.  She recently was in a car accident and susstained a 50% tear in her left rotator cuff, same side as her lymph node dissection.  What are the risks of rotator cuff surgery at this point?

It depends on how good her glucose control has been and is now. Diabetics can be more prone to infection than non-diabetics, but this is entirely dependent on how good their glucose control has been and continues to be. If her glucose levels are normal with her medications, then her risks are minimal, but if her glucose levels have been high, she may be more prone to infection and small blood vessel damage from high sugar levels may make her take longer to heal than non-diabetics. So much of our health really boils down to US -- how well we manage the glucose levels.
