throbbing carotid artery in teenager

by cavedin, Dec 30, 2007 12:00AM
My 16 yr old daughter is Type 1 diabetic. Dx's at 7 yrs old. She suffers from throbbing carotid arteries. Some days are worse then others. throbbing in one artery may be worse than the other. She has had brain MRI with and without contrast  (18 months ago) which ame back negative. Dopplers of the carotid arteries came back negative. Saw a pediatric cardiologist, wore a heart monitor (to track EKG's) for 30 days. Everything came back negative. Echo was never done. She is on Lipitor and Enalapril. You can see the artery beating just looking at her sometimes. It does not inhibit her from doing anything. Pediatrician, cardiologist and Endocrinologist have no idea what it is. One Physician Assistant mentioned possibly a muscle spasm, another suggessted perhaps she needs more water (hydration). When symptoms first presented themself she had a partial numbness in her top lip which went away in a day and has not returned. I thought Bells Palsy but was told no. She has never seen a neurologist. It worries me and although I am very thankful all tests are negative, I am still concerned. She complains now of pain above both her eyes (under her eyebrows. Saw an opthamologist last month and said all looked fine. I recently had benign brain tumor removed. Should another Brain MRI be done on her?

. I am not physician, but the mom of a type one diabetic.  I always believe that you are the best judge of your child and how he is doing. I would go with your gut feeling and get a second opinion if you feel you need it.  Just remember to check with your insurance to see what there [policy is on second opinions first.

I always fell it is better to have things checked out for your own piece of mind
