I have been type 1 diabetic for 11 years now. Actually it is normal and common for blood sugars to rise during sickness and infections I would suggest maybe straining some tea made out if cinnamon or applying it directly to his infection as I have done this on various occasions and it is know to have antimicrobicrobial and antiseptic properties to help with infections and also helps the body to posses insulin more effectively and is known lower blood sugars. If his sugar is persistently high try checking every two hours to help mitigate this should help catch sugars before they sky rocket.

hope this helps,
Alex

Hello, infection and inflammation can cause blood sugars to rise.  This is what has caused the rise, rather than the medicine.

YOur father's blood sugars are terribly high and will complicate him getting well.  If his blood sugars stay close to 400 you need to take him to the emergency room.

Even if his sugars are 200, the are still way too high and need to be treated with insulin to bring them down to the low 100s (normal blood sugars should be in the range of 80 - 140).  However, considering his sugars are so high he may feel bad if his sugars suddenly drop - even though it is very necessary to get them down.  So this should be done in close coordination with his doctor.
