Is Type 1 diabetes ever diagnosed with a glucose test?

My son has ongoing blood sugar problems.  Everything I read on diabetes with children seems to indicate it isn't diagnosed until it is completely out on control and the child ends up in the hospital.  I'm just wondering if anyone has ever had their child diagnosed through the glucose test.

My glucose was in the upper 260's.  If your child is showing high glucose and ketones and your doctor isn't helping, you should try a new pediatrician or try going to an endocronologist who is more knowledgable on diabetes and would be able to explain things to you.  I was diagnosed at 12, I'm 29 now and a new mother myself.  I really feel that if you think something is off you should go futher with it, in a weird way mothers just know sometimes, it won't hurt your child, in the long run it will only help them live a longer healthier life

So when you had the glucose test what were your results?  Was it completely out of control?  My son had these tests a year ago and they came back very atypical.  I don't think he had sugar in his urine but he has had a small amount of ketones.

I was diagnosed by a glucose test and a urine test.  I have been a type 1 diabetic for 16 years now, and I think the fact that it was caught before it was out of control is why I have been able to do so well.  Your pediatrician should be able to do a urine test and find out.
