R-ALAs

Do you know what R-ALAs are and are they really as beneficial to diabetics as certain publications suggest?
Alpha Lipoic Acid (R not Synthetic)

Thanks for your time,
I would also like to thank you all for this forum, very informative and let you know that I am going to be starting a Phd program (which I would never have contemplated prior to my diagnosis of Type1 DM, on Diabetes related research)

Mayo Clinic has reported some research findings based on a study in Russia where ALA was shown to ease diabetic neuropathy.  At least at the time the article was written, the IV-formulation used in that study was not available in US.

The article is a bit dated (April2003) but might shed some light.

I'm cautious about jumping on a supplement bandwagon, and when I think I've read enuf about something to want to try it, I run the idea by my physician.

I was not familiar with ALA's, but looked them up online after reading your question.  It certainly sounds like a miracle drug for diabetics and almost anyone.  Supposedly it is a powerful antioxidant and helps to prevent the complications of diabetes.  I would love to hear more if any of you have ever actually used this supplement and experienced some of the se benefits.  Sorry I don't have more info. Good luck in your Ph.D. program.
