Diabetes and a cold

Why is my blood sugar on such a roller coaster with a head cold, congestion?

I usually run from 80 to 120,  very rare for me to be over 140.  Had a cold / cough / congestion and found my sugar going to 243.  I had not eaten anything more than my 60 cards per meal, and taking insulin shots on a sliding scale. I found myself unable to stay awake on that day. I have been diabetic since last August. I weigh 156 and 5'8" so I am not overweight. How do I handle these major spikes in the future?

I have higher than usual BG readings when I've had a cold. Since I try to keep tight control of my blood sugar levels, I'm so afraid of catching a cold or flu. I had two colds last fall. I was careful to eat lo carb food, which I do anyway. No high carb fruit or veggies. No processed foods or alcohol for me since last May. Lost 30#'s.

Illness, stress, hormones,  lack of sleep ...  All can effect BG levels some cause BG to rise for some people   for others some cause BG to drop.

BG is NOT static it changes.
