Flucting blood sugar, and cholesterol, weight loss from my diet.

Wanted to ask if it is safe for me to lose 12 pounds in 4 months.(I now weigh 100 lbs)  My A1c was 6.9 in Sept 2012 but my cholesterol was really high, especially my triglycerides.  I had a blood test done again in December and my triglycerides went from 298 to 133, but my A1c went up to 7.3.  I am so confused.  How could my blood sugar spike when I was really watching what I ate, hardly any carbs at all.  I do not think I have been taking in 800 calories a day.  Could I have put my body in shock from such a restrictive diet?  Up to my 2nd blood test I did not eat any meat, had oatmeal for breakfast - a can of sardines at 11:00 am (or low fat cottage cheese & an avacado) and 2 pieces of fish for a late lunch, and soup at night with a salad.  I did a A1c this month at home and my # went to 6.4.  I am just worried about the weight loss, but I used to weigh less than 90 pounds in my younger years and only gained the weight in my late 40"s = I had never enjoyed eating when I was younger and started enjoying eating and my weight went to about 113 or so, I am very small boned.  I was thinking I should maybe eat more beef and some fats to get my weight up.  Need to check my cholesterol again, but I would bet my cholesterol is down to normal now.  My fasting blood sugar has been 110 for years and my doctor never told me it was a problem.  Last year it was 134, and then my doctor finally did an A1c test in 2012.  I am not on any medications yet.  Any thoughts on this. I appreciate your help. Julie

many people are more sensitive to carb induced BG rise in the AM than they are later in the day.  Oatmeal is very carby and most diabetics cant eat it without getting high BG from the oatmeal.  Where they can tolerate it better for lunch or supper

Hello,

with an A1c of 7, you probably needs some meds to help control blood sugar.  Both diet and exercie are important to management.

Unfortunatley diabetes is often a progessive condition and may get worse, even with diet restriction.

I hope your Dr would now do thorough testing and start treatment.  Seems that you are very small and light.

Make sure you get enough calories (even if you are restricting carbs - which is a good idea).  It is not recommended for anyone to eat less than 1200 calories a day, and probably 1600 is safer.

Losing 12 lbs in 4 months is a safe target (1 lb a week), but may be difficult if you are eating so little food.  You may need to increase your food intake (so that your body doesn't think you are starving).  You can add more healthy fats and protein (rather than carbs).
