Hair loss from Metformin???

Could Metformin cause thinning or hair loss?  I started two Metformin 500 mg a day last May. Went on a locarb, no processed foods or alcohol diet. Lost 30#'s. End of August, switched to one Metformin ER 500 mg a day cause my A1C went from 7.4 down to 5.2 in 3 1/2 months. I have thought of a vitamin or iron deficiency, but I eat a lot of healthy foods and haven't lost weight beyond the 30#'S I lost last summer. I read that some people on here think Victoza caused their hair loss. I'm 68 so maybe it's due to aging. Will ask my dr when I see him the end of April for an A1C test.

I mentioned Victoza because there was a previous question that had about 20 comments on it. It had to do with hair loss. I myself am on Metformin ER 500 mg. I was taking a guess that Metformin might cause my thinning hair. Also, because I carefully watch what I eat, I thought it might be a vitamin deficiency.

Confused by your question.  You asked if Metformin can cause hair loss.  Then you mention Victoza.  They are different meds.   I looked up Metformin in my PDR. No mention of hair loss.   That's all I can tell you re: your query.

It does cause hair thinning.  I've been on it for a while and sadly its one of the side affects.  My hair thinned out dramatically and my doctor confirmed it was a side affect of the medicine.

Ugh. I take Metformin and Victoza too and my hair is thinning. :( I always wondered what was going on.
