Help!!!

Please help me with any advice.  I found out I was diabetic several years ago.  (I'm making this short)  I have been literally passed on thru different doctors, and none of them seem to help me.  One says I need to see this dr. and they can help me better. I think they really don't want to fool with me, honestly.  Anyway... They said I was type 2 diabetic.  The last doctor I was seeing he put me on- Novolog sliding scale with each meal and at bedtime, Novolin N 10 units before meals, Lantus 40 units twice daily, 2000 mg of glucophage, asa daily, lisinopril a day.  My blood sugar still runs between 250-500.  I take my medication everyday (the best of my ability and what I can afford), exercise 30 min a day (walking), and watch what I eat. I recently had staph in my left kidney, and I have a cyst on my right one.  I also have NLD on both legs, and I am afraid I am going to die trying to survive.  At my last appt, he was upset at all my high numbers, and said that I was a non-compliant patient and told me to go somewhere else. I tried to explain that I am doing the best I can, and I'm scared.   I am at my end on what to do...I'm afraid I'm going to die before I hit 35.  Is pancreas transplant a good thing?  I need advice and help.. Thank you.

medication is one part of blood sugar controle (BG)...  your taking drugs
so is execise...  your exercising
so is what you eat....  What do you eat?

Carbohydrates raise BG...  ALL carbs raise BG carbs are pasta, rice, wheat,  most fruit, ALL raise BG.

many diabetics eat lower carbs to help control BG
lower carb intake can also mean you will need less insulin, so reducing your carb intake drastically and not changing your insulin can cause hypos

I agree with super. I have a type 1 diabetic daughter she is 7 yrs old and we count carbs. She gets so many units of insulin for how many carbs she eats plus so many units for how much her numbers are above what the doc wants. That doc sounded like a real jerk. My grandma is a type 2 diabetic as well and has many problems with high numbers and we just found out that she is in begining stages of kidney failure. So its deffinantly important not to give up. You deffinantly need some carbs but reduce how many you eat and see if that helps. Meats are carb free most cheeses some sugar free stuff is low in carbs but not always carb free. That is a big mistake sometimes people make thinking that just because its sugar free its ok but sometimes sugar free stuff is still loaded with carbs. Example i was going to buy peeps for her for easter they were sugar free but still loaded with 28 carbs. I would find a knew doc an see if carb counting may be a good step.

Hello,

welcome.  Firstly, you may be type 1 instead of type 2.  The insulin regime that you are following is only one approach.  there is another approach which uses both short and long acting insulins and calculates dosages based on how much carb and protein you eat.

Critical is to count carbohydrates and to determine exactly how much insulin you need to cover how much carbohydrfates.  Don't give up.  YOu are young and you can manage this with the right information and tools (insulin, diet, exercise).

I don't beleive you are non-compliant, but perhaps you haven't been given the information you need to be able to control your diabetes well.

I will give you the names of 2 books that I highly recommend, which can help you understand how to use insulin, how to match it to what you eat and also to guide you on diet.  Both are available on amazon and should not be too expensive.

1. Using Insulin - by John Walsh.
2. Diabetes Solutions - by Richard Bernstein (make sure you get the 2011 edition).

You also need to be testing to see your response to what you eat and then adjusting what and how much you eat.  You need to learn to count carbohydrates and adjust your insulin to it.

Please post specific questions and we will do our best to answer you.

Best wishes
