My low carb diet is 60 per meal. It sure has worked for me. Lost 63 lbs and A1C last time 5.3%. Doctor says my diabetes has been reversed without meds. Some times when shopping a bag of potato chips will jump into my cart but I put it right back on the shelf.
Hello,
with constant higher blood sugars your pancreas will eventually stop working. I am assuming you are on oral meds. If they are no longer working (and super congratulations on the weight loss and diet) then you may need to go onto insulin.
A low carb diet may help futher. You can look at Atkins style diet, or Dr. Richard Bernstein, which is specifically tailored for people with diabetes.
Optimal A1C to prevent further damage is ideally below 5 (normal is 4.1 - 4.6), or as close as possible.
Don't give up. Your lifestyle changes are only helpful, but unforunately diabetes can be progressive. However, it can be managed.
"....changed my eating habits drastically.."
Changed from to what? Are you consuming white foods - potatoes, white rice, breads and crackers made with white flour? Consuming sugary foods? What is your daily carbohydrate intake? What is your daily exercise regimen? What is your current weight? Without knowing all the aforementioned in detail you made it difficult for us to try and figure out the cause/s of your elevated glucose levels.
