Newly Diagnosed - when should my numbers drop?

I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with an A1C of 11.7 and my doc prescribed Metformin 1000 mg.  He had me cut the tablets in half and take 1/2 pill twice a day so my stomach can get used to the medicaton.  I just began monitoring my glucose 4 days ago.  My before bedtime numbers are over 200 and under 230.  My before breakfast numbers were 199 - 227.  I started taking the whole tablet twice a day yesterday and my before bedtime number was 161, but my before breakfast number was 200.  Is this typical?  I was hoping my numbers would decrease more rapidly.  I am also walking at least 30 minutes a day and watching my carbs.

I think if you eat a VERY low carb diet consistently, you will control your BG levels and you won't have to start on insulin. This is a time where it is SO important to start looking for low carb meals/snacks.
Do a lot of research and be your own advocate.
Try looking at Paleo websites for ideas of healthy all natural low carb meals and snack ideas.

Hello,

Low carb will be really helpful and the exercise.

If your numbers don't come down further (ideally 80-120 range which is normal), then after a few week you may need to start on insulin. This is not something to be scared of. Insulin is a fabulous tool and can be used to normalise blood sugar.

Please read up on diabetes and your treatment options.  It is important to get good control so you can avoid any long term complications of diabetes.

that sounds normal.  Met can take up to a month to work to full potential.  For most people the AM  reading is the highest due to DP (dawn phenomenon)  It took time to become diabetic it will take time to control it.
