Going over 140 is start of insulin resistance. Going over 180 is consider diabetes.
Depending on your weight and exercise levels already that would be a good place to start. A LCHF diet is an option to research and consider.
As far as drugs, it's unfortunate that your doctor did not order insulin levels. Well they usually don't -- so that's what I'm speculating. This is important info to know if you root cause is low insulin production or high insulin production. Maybe a future test.
Metformin is typically where everyone is started. Some people have the idea that it works as soon as you take it. But it takes time to build up in your system.
For a short while you'll have to live with a glucometer, if you haven't started already. It's pretty much the only way to know what works and what doesn't.

You will need to control your carb intake. Your Dr may start you on metformin or other medication to help control blood sugars.
It shows your carb intalerant carbs will raise your BG. in that test your BG should not go over 140.
