Hello,
yes, it will get harder as the pregnancy progresses, as the insulin resistance increases as the placenta grows.
Are you on insulin?
I have had 2 diabetic pregnancies and my need for insulin increased dramatically from start to delivery. Both my girls were perfectly fine (I did have excellent control). My HbA1c when I delivered my first duaghter was close to 5. She was a natural delivery at 38 weeks and weighed 7 lbs 3 oz (I think I was taking about 60 units/day at the time of delivery, having started insulin at 3 months pregnant). For my second daughter it was 5.6 at time of delivery (and I was taking about 100 units of insulin before she was delivered compared to approx. 20 at the beginning of the pregnancy). She was 7lbs 6 oz at nearly 40 weeks (by cesarian - reason unrelated to diabetes)..
No, but you may need to start taking insulin. I had gestational diabetes with both my kids. It is so important to keep your blood glucose in as normal a range as possible so your baby doesn't get huge. I'm small and I had to get induced at 36 weeks because he would have been 9 1/2 pounds! I still had to get a c-section. He is now 20 years old, and weighs about 110 pounds wet-go figure. Incidentally, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a year ago. At the time I was pregnant, I was told it was a window into my future, as about 40 percent will get type 2 diabetes later in life.
