lantus insulin problems
I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!

I would continue to use insulin glargine, a recombinent insulin analogue (Lantus) without concern. This was the recommendation in the British Journal Lancet Vol 1, 374 issue 9649 p511-513 15 August 2009. The media has produced some fear based upon five studies that I have read, and used some statistical manipulation that would have failed me in "statistics one" in the eighth grade. The experimental protocols were pretty crummy. There are about eight or nine reasons why the studies did not support the conclusion that the use of Lantus significantly increases the possibility of a malignancy. I am sure posting on the internet you will fine someone who has developed cancer and used Lantus, but such an anecdotal experience is meaningless. Lantus is an excellent drug, with a good safety record, and the the evidence to date suggests benefits far outweigh any potential risks.

Further, inconsistencies in findings within and across individual studies raise concerns as to whether an association between the use of insulin glargine and cancer truly exists."
