Foot wounds caused by diabetes

Koh
My grandmother is hospitalised with a fractured hip.  She has diabetes and due to prolong laying on bed, she developed a sore on her feet.  The wound did not heal and doctor mentioned that it has spread upwards and an operation to amputate the feet is required.

We know it will tramautised my grandmother as she is not prepared for amputation operation.  She is 80 year old with a series of other medical problems such as high blood pressure, weak heart, low blood count which requires blood transfusion and the diabetic condition.

Due to these circumstances, we are very worried for her and the operation.

I have heard about Manuka honey that could help heal diabetic wounds when applied on.  My family would consider any alternatives if it could save her the amputation.  I would sincerely appreciate if you could advise on Manuka honey and any other alternatives available.

Thank you.

Best Regards

Hi,
I am afraid I am not familiar with Manuka Honey, so I cannot comment on it, or the ability to help heal diabetic wounds.
I am sorry about this development  for your  grandmother, this is indeed a serious development. While you are seeking alternative treatments, also keep in mind that diabetic wounds do often require  fairly aggressive treatments to avoid spread of the infection(which can then become much more serious). I suggest perhaps seeking out a second opinion from another vascular surgeon regarding the need for amputation, but consider it seriously because too much delay may make your gandmother's condition worsen. I am sorry I could not be of more help regarding alternative medication treatments for this situation.

Best of luck and take care.
