High sugar reading

High sugar reading

During my husbands last visit to the Doctor he was given the medication "Exforge" for hypertension.  Prior to taking this medication his blood sugar was under control (115 average).  Currently he is averaging a fasting reading of 155.  Have you heard of any correlation between "Exforge" and this increase?  His current meds for Type 2 are: Janumet 50-500 2x per day, Glipizide 5mg. 4x per day.  He is also on Triamterene, and fish oil capsules.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Hi,
I am not very familiar with this new drug and have not used it in practice at this time. It combines two very commonly used medications to treat high blood pressure. Some BP meds do lead to an increase in blood sugars although the two that make up Exforge are not commonly associated with this problem. In any case, if his BP is now under control with this medication, the choice is to either increase his diabetes pills, or try a new BP medication to see if his glucose gets better while still keeping his pressure controoled. I suggest speaking to his doctor soon so you can get going on the glucose issue before too long.
Take care.
