How many years does diabetes take off your life?

I've heard it is 20.

Thanks for using the forum.

There is no formula that says that you have diabetes, subtract x number of years from your lifespan. Diabetes is a controllable disease. By maintaining a stable blood sugar, you have the power to prevent many of the symptoms/side effects of diabetes. The lifestyle you lead is a bigger factor in overall lifespan. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and healthy lifestyle decisions can do more to extend your life than a diabetes diagnosis may do to shorten it.

That depends on well you control it.

No control short life good control longer life there are lots of people that have had diabetes for over 60 years.  They control it.

One thing I hate  when you hear statistics like that they dump ALL diabetics into the same group, those that control there BG into the normal range 65 to 120 and those that do not BG 300 hundred and higher.

Ive had diabetes for 28 years for the last 14 years Ive controlled it  :)  I too thought I would be dead by now but Im still going strong at 60

Diabetes does NOT have to be a death sentence it IS controllable.
