Low Insulin level

Hi,

I had a Glucose tolerence test perfomed which at fasting was 84 at 60min it was 169 and at 2hr it was 94 which are all normal.  Looking at my test results I notice that my insulin level was a 2.7.  This lab considers this low, the reference range that they give is 3.0-17.0.  My doctor had told me that everything was fine with all of my tests but I am a little worried about the insulin abnormality. Should I be concerned?

Hello,

It depends on when your insulin was "low." If it was during the period when your glucose was 84mg/dL this can be quite normal--you don't need much insulin during that time. I doubt there is cause for concern right now but you certainly can discuss with your doctor checking it again in future. If concerns are specifically in relation to insulin production then a C-peptide level can be checked as a good marker.
