Blood in stool
I am 22 years old, I have had an ongoing problem for the last three years or so. I occasionally pass blood and/or mucus in my stools - the mucus is usually either a dark or pinkish color, I don't have any pain. I'm very worried about what this could be, I have tests at the hospital but they couldn't find anything (I think a sigmodoscopy??) and my family don't have any history of anything like this.

I have the same problem as many, rectal bleeding associated with bowel movements and sometimes occompanied with short "stings" of pain. I too am embarrased to go to the doc, but i am on my way soon. I would also like to clear up some misconceptions i've read. I am a technician in a microbiology lab and work (unfortunately) very closely with stool specimens. The occult blood test routinly done on stool is NOT a colon/rectal cancer screen by any means, it simply detects any amount of blood WITHIN the stool which you all know can be present for a number of reasons other than cancer. On the other hand a negative occult blood test does not mean that cancer cannot be present.
I have been reading some of your letters here - and I have the same problem (am 34 years old, male, normal weight, "good health," but on medication for anxiety and for high blood pressure; I take some vitamins and herbs) - I don't believe at this point that the blood is mixed in with the stool, necessarily, and I have some sort of periodic trouble in the anal area (rawness, bleeding, soreness, so to speak) which does not always coincide with the blood in the stool. I have no insurance currently, and may soon have it; at that time I will ask my doctor to prescribe some sort of test. I am hoping - please God - I am hoping that that it is simply hemorrhoids or fissures or something like this. Just offering my own situation, no answers yet. God bless and keep all of you safe,

I am a 34 year old male in good heath. However I do smoke about a pack of cigarettes per day. I do not drink or use any other drugs execpt Diapiazem. I ordered it from the internet and it came from Tailand. I have touble sleeping and it is a from of valium. I have taking one pill 10mg in the evening for about six months now.
I just recently found blod in my stool. Very fresh and clear too see.
I am curious if the generic Valium is causing it. My farther has know prostrate problem and I take saw palemto vitiman everyday from a health food store. If that likley to cause this as well.
I am currently unemployed and do not have health insurance, so you are my only hope

I have been diagnoised with diverticulosis and enlongated colon which occurred with the last five years. What were the possible causes and how do I reverse this trend?
I am suprised at how many people are dealing with the same thing I am. For a year or so I have had rectal bleeding also with blood streaked stools, not sure if blood is in stools. It is so scary....lately I have pain that I kind of thought was menstrual cramps, but I am also having a feeling of pressure in my rectal area, and sometimes a terrible pain and sense of pressure.....is this a sign of cancer? I am 17 years old and for about 1 week now i have been knowticing blood in my stools aswell as this mucus. What scares me most is it seems liek tissue is alos attached to the stools. I am scared out of my mind now that i read all these things on cancer and such. If there is any possible help for me can someone reply THANX so much

I am a 49 yr old black female that have this bleeding for over 4 years,the bleeding my comes sometimes monthly just as if I'm having a peorid and last from 3 to 7 days,I never know when it is comming, but what I find strange it that the blood squirt's out like a spray gun and sometimes it has clots I recently had a CT scan and it did not show anything ans a few years I had a colonoscopy and it was also negative. I have another one scheduled for May 17th and also I,m going back to my Gyn. for pap. but my Gyn when I would tell him about it he didn't seem too concerned. I have no family history of colon cancer.
What is going on with so much of the same symtoms is it Stress? what we eat?

I went to the doctor today. The last 2 days I have filled the bowl with blood. He examined me and told me there is no evidence of hemmoroids. He has recommended a colonoscapy. I am only 31 but am quite scared. I have no pain or other discomfort. Colon Cancer?????

In young adults without a family history of gastrointestinal problems, symptoms of blood and mucus passed with the stool are usually indicative of lower rectal or anal problems such as hemarrhoids or fissures. It is necessary, however, to exclude mucosal conditions e.g. polyps or tumors and that is why a colonoscopy is done. IF the blood is MIXED with the stool, then it is necessary to rule out conditions above the level of the sigmoidoscope. For these instances we do a colonoscopy or an air contrast barium enema.

For the last three or four weeks, I have had to take a laxative for constipation. Last weekend, after having three normal bowel movements earlier in the day, I had two that were entirely bright red. Since then I have been dizzy, slightly sick at my stomach and running a low grade fever. I saw my regular doctor on Monday and am waiting to see a gastroenterologist in a couple of weeks. I am 41 years of age and only now of a couple of cousins that had a history of colon cancer. Any help will be appreciated.

I am suffering from the same exact symptoms as you! I am currently having a Fecal Blood Occult test being done that tries to detect Colon Rectal Cancer. If there are no findings, I will have a Coloscopy done. It is really scaryI know! I am only 30. I keep wondering if it is something in my diet or not.

I'm sorry to hear that your son is so ill. One thing that may be possible is a disease called Gastroparesis, that is delayed emptying of the stomach. The tests they have done already wouldn't have picked this up. Testing for this requires a gastric emptying study. For this test they would have him eat food which has something in it they can see on x-ray, then they watch the food digest to measure how long it takes. Upper GI cannot accomplish this. From the symptoms you describe, Gastroparesis sounds like a very real possibility.
There is one other thing that may be a possibility, which happened to my little cousin. He went through the same symptoms, choking and then vomiting. They couldn't figure out what it was. It turns out he has asthma. He would choke on phlegm (sp?) which would make him vomit the phlegm along with his entire stomach contents. He was especially bad when he had a cold, when there was more congestion. Once the asthma was treated his problem resolved.
In my opinion this does not sound like reflux, although it sounds like it might be part of his underlying problem. Gastroparesis also causes terrible reflux. If he is choking in his sleep he may be aspirating the reflux of stomach contents. If you can, I would try elevating the head of his bed at least 6 inches. You can have reflux even if an upper GI is normal. I am living proof of that! If the Prevacid helps that's great, I would keep him on it. If the vomiting continues I would really recommend the gastric emptying test, it's totally painless. It's best to have this test run when he is having symptoms. 25-month-old with "reflux"? My son's diagnosis was based on projectile vomiting at 3 months and "failure to thrive" by 6 months.
Background:
Aidan started out in the 75 %, 7lbs 12 and 20 1/2 inches but started to decline at about 4 month and was completely off the chart on weight by six months but height was about still 40%. We've always watched him carefully and weighed him every two weeks to once a month - he's been on a high fat, high protein diet since he was about eight months (extra formula in everything, cheese, recently half and half milk on advise of GI doc- lots of meat etc.) and though he eats a lot we've never manage to get his weight up.
He's always had a problem with vomitting and I first went to the doctor when he was three months old cause he would projectile vomit about once a day - usually first thing in the morning. The doctor always told me it was normal and he would grow out of it. Last summer (18 months) he started to throw up more frequently and later this fall it was almost every night. He usually starts with this cough and then sounds like he's choking. We always ran to him because it sounded like he couldn't breath - just chiking. And with it the vomitting. It wasn't just a little or once - but he'd throw up everything in his stomach and then bile. If he had a cold, fell down, played too hard, choked on food he'd throw up. Of course I was concerned but the doctor just dismissed it. I can understand why cause he always seems so healthy - unless you see him throwing up. So at the urge of my family (who'd seen him throw up) and father (cardiologist), I switched doctors. In December his height was also off the chart. The
pediatrician thought the vomitting must be keeping him from absorbing adequate nutrition and was now stunting his growth. So she sent us to Pediatritic GI who took it all quite seriously and sent us for cf test (negative), upper g.i.(normal), blood work (?), etc. Oh and she also put him on Prevacid for the vomitting.
The good news is that after only six weeks on prevacid he's gone from 31.5 in to 33 in (amazing) and now weighs 23 lbs from 21 lbs. (also amazing). He's still tiny but he's now back at the bottom of the chart. Within the first two days on Prevacid he threw up three times and not again for the whole six weeks.
At his 2-year appointment 2 weeks ago his pediatrition took him off the prevacid since he was now back on the chart and upper gi was normal. DH took him to the appointment so I didn't get to protest this. Isn't the fact that this is working be the very reason he stays on it? Of course, he threw up again the first night but hasn't again. He is, however, waking several times a night choking though.
That first night last week he vomitted again I videotaped him while DH held him over the tub. I did this because I feel like the doctors don't know what I mean by the choking since it usually happens at night. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I write this all now because last night at my sisters he started to choke on apple juice and it freaked my sister out! He turns all read and I have to run to get him standing upright. His face turns very red and his eyes tear while he coughs without intaking.
Q: Do any of your kids choke like this before, during or instead of vomitting? Should I be concerned about him choking in sleep? does this ever happen to 2-year olds?

I am ninteen years old and I have Crohns disease. I recently was in the hospital with Pancreatites for 12 days beacause i took a medicane called perinethol(mp6) which had the bad affect on me. My amylase level upon entering the hospital was over 800 but it gradually ent down to 300-400 and then to under 200. I was released after my doctor said even though my amylase level was high it may stay high for months and that my tests look good. Was that the right decision? Could my pacreatites come back? If I get some periodic pains should i go back?
