Cirrhosis-Prognosis?

My mother in law has cirrhosis, was told to stop drinking, but has not.  She is jaundice, whites of her eyes are very yellow, has gained weight through the stomach (looks very bloated)breath is very musty, skin looks terrible red spider veins.  She sleeps 18 hours a day or more and has little energy and complains of nausea.  She reports that she has tremors when she goes to bed.  My assumption is that her liver is beginning to fail...How long can this go on before her organs completely shut down?

Hi! My husband has been a chronic drinker for several years! He has been showing some strange signs of things! He won't stop drinking and is in his 40's! His behavior is different! His nails are turning white! He is getting vericose looking veins! Belly swelling! Red looking face! Slurred speech! Psycosis! And there are these weird bumps forming on his body! I call them boils! I am positive that he has Cirrosis of the liver! Fatigue! Depression! He will not go to the hospital! He won't recieve treatment! Is there some law, when a person becomes beyond reach that you can make them get treatment! Are these the symptoms of Cirrosis? Please email me! ***@****

Ihave been diognost with hep c since 1988,in 1997 after bearly making it through an unexpected pregnancy i was diagnosed with cirohsis. I was sent to M.S.U. in Ann Arbor to be put on interferon and reproviran. They did another liver biopsy and said i had cirohsis and it was too far gone for treatment. Now its july of 2000 and i am retaining fluid, i wake from sleeping with bags of fluid under my eyes, im in a lot of pain under my ribs, big lack of energy, confusion,forgetfullnes-bad,lesions,and now im having trouble with my bowels not moving.I am on lactulose but it doesnt seem to be working any more, so my stomach hurts very bad.My doctor did one of several previous ENDOSCOPY. I have not gotten any answers, like they dont want to tell me. His words were " Dont worry about that right now " Does anyone know what is happening to me?   I am currently being evaluated for a transplant.  I just dont know what to expect next, they leave you in the dark a lot. I also have acities, and portal hypertention. I was only able to carry my son 30 weeks. He is fine now, 3 yrs. old. I often wonder how long i will be able to see him grow?    Any responses would be more than welcome!!!!

My brother is in a VA hospital with liver failure.  It is important for me to understand what the signs are of how sick he is.  The slurred speech, the tiredness, the skin tone.  Thank you for giving some details on your loved ones conditions - experiences.

Dear Lynn,
My family lost my mom a year ago to cirhossis.  (She had contracted Hepatitus B, due to a blood
transfusion and it went undetected for too many years.)  You asked about what to expect.  We knew
we were nearing the end when Mama began several manifestations:  She began to swell (edema)
at much more frequent intervals.  She would become disoriented (due to an increasing ammonia
level).  She was on Lactulose (massive doses) to try to counteract this condition.  At the end, she
began to hold fluid on her heart and it invaded her lungs.  We had Mama with us almost two years
after she was diagnosed with cirhossis, due mainly to her tenacity and a team of excellent doctors.
Her passing was quiet as she slipped into what would be the last of several comas.  I do so hope
that my sharing this with you has not been too graphic or insensitive.  It's just that, having been
there, and now, having my sister diagnosed with the same illness, I understand the "need to know".
I'll certainly pray, not only for your mother-in-law, but for you and your family's ability to cope
and comfort.  ......... GB

I recently have had bloody stools. The DR has ruled out hemmoroids and I am scheduled for a colonoscopy. I too, drink but have never been diagnosed with cirrosis. Could my blood be a sign of a liver problem?

How can I test?

Dear Lynn,
Any predictions regarding expected length of survival are crude guesses.  We know that for people with lover disease, survival can be correlated with lab tests (Biliriubin, albumin and protime), ascites and encephaloathy (change in mentasl status).  Ideally, she should stop drinking.  It is possible that agressive medical therapy could improve some of the problems that she has.
