Dizziness, Chest Pain, GERD?

Nearly 10 years ago I had the typical feeling of "something stuck in the back of my throat" that so many have described in regard to GERD problems. At that time I had an endoscopy done as well as scan of the area. Nothing was really found and I was told to change eating habits, etc.

This throat discomfort gradually increased and to make a long story short has NEVER gone away and has grown to involve the area from the back of my throat to my lower esophagus and into my gall bladder area. At times this is simply an inconvenience, at others it feels as if my throat is swelling shut. Swallowing of food has not been a problem really, but pills and food seem to "catch".

The last 6 months or so whenever my esophagus acts up, I get dizzy and often have chest pain. In fact several times dizziness almost to the point of passing out.

I am begining to wonder if perhaps rather than GERD I may have a growth or tumor that is causing all these symptoms that is large enough now to put pressure on my carotid artery when it "swells".

Please know I am not a nut case, or don't THINK I am anyway!I have never been a whiner or hypochondriac, but this has gotten to a point that it impacts daily life in a negative way.
I am NOT a doctor..but no doctor has EVER been able to give me a satisfactory answer to these symptoms or a cure or real help in solving it.

Anyone have anything similar...especially with the dizziness involved and chest pain when you have esophegal problems? I am anxious to talk to ANYONE who has similar symptoms that has alleviated them in any ways and how. THANKS

I had dizziness with Gerd too. Not that spinning kind. It is like  a small rush suddenly to my head, it happens several times a day.

Can't figure out why. So did the doctor. This is the most frustrated part after I had GERD.

I also had neck sore, back sore. I did have work stress before I was diagonosed as Gerd.
Doctor said maybe all these come from stress, I also will have CT scan soon.

Any one has same kind of dizziness/or wave to head/ or lightheaded?

Thanks

Xiaowei

I am 31, and for the past 5 months I have been have the same type of problems. I went to my primary doctor and I was told that "it's all in my head". He put me on valium, nothing happened. I finally went to a ENT due to Glopus syndromes (feeling of tightness in the throat). She looked in my throat and advised me that there is evidence of acid reflux. I had a Barium swallow test done and it showed that my condition was pretty severe. Recently I have been having spasms in the esophagus and rapid heart beat, it only appears to occurs at night. I am also experiencing chest pain for the last week or so. I have been on Protonix for the last two weeks, but I am still not feeling well. I do feeling dizzy sometimes which comes and goes.

I really hope, we all feel better soon.

P.S. stop taking Ibupprofen, it makes it worse.  Also, you guys should get tested for a bacteria called H.Pylori, mostly found in the stomach.

Thanks and regards

I also wanted to let you know that I to have suffered with feeling as if things were stuck in my throat, the chest pain and lots of Heartburn. I went to the Dr and he did the scope test and indeed I did have a Hiatal Hernia. I know the pain and the frustration behind all of this. I took medication for awhile and it just wouldnt do the job. My doctor finally decided that the surgery to repair the hiatal hernia was the only option left. I also had my gallbladder taken out at that time. It was the best thing that could of ever of happened to me. I know longer have any of those symptoms. I recommend you go see a surgeon who specializes in this surgery. The surgery was alittle rough but it you can stand pain for about 3 weeks than you are good to go. It was worth the pain to me. Good luck I hope you find out what it is you are looking for.

I have had many of the same symtoms - except dizziness - that you all have had.  Mine began with trouble swallowing - bread and meat getting 'stuck' in my throat, etc.  I then started experiencing trouble getting a deep breath for a while.  I went to the Dr. and was diagnosed with GERD (I had no tests though) and put on Reglan and Aciphex for 2 months (due to one month of tx was not enough to get things under control.  I am much better now - but still have the occ. chest pain - especially when I am stressed.  I have wondered if my condition was really a hiatal hernia acting up or ulcerated. (The same meds are used for HH tx).  Maybe you could try the meds for 6-8 weeks (lots of pills - but worth it) to help you 'heal' and hopefully you will get better.  Ask your DR. and try - it - I didn't think I would ever get better....was afraid I would need surgery my chest pain was so frequent and uncomfortable.  Good luck - I know it is so scary when you have 'something' and don't know what it is.......dd  ;)

All three of you have had interesting experiences. If nothing else it is good to know that I am not the only one with these symptoms. I have more or less given up on the traditional medical world for any worthwhile information. It is a racket that we have been brainwashed into trusting for answers. My best relief is from meditation, herbal teas and walking. I think I am going to have to learn to live with this. The medical world has no answers.....as usual. Good luck to the three of you in finding if not a cure.....some comfort.

A few weeks ago I noticed that my heart felt like it was pounding.  Every once in a while my chest felt restricted.  Then, the other week I woke up at 3:00 in the morning.  I heard gurgling in my chest.  I walked into the kitchen and blacked out.  When I couldn't breath I got scared.
My doctor says it's GERD.  I just couldn't believe that it could cause dizziness and breathing difficulties.  I have had discomfort in the chest and slight dizziness.  Yesterday when I woke up, my diaphragm felt restricted.  I could expand my chest to take in air but my diaphragm didn't seem to contract and relax normally.  I was getting worried.  After a few minutes, it got better.  After about fifteen minutes I felt fine.  The whole thing seems crazy.  I'm afraid I'm going to stop breathing because of glorified heartburn.  (Actually, I haven't had any burning sensation.)  I have heard very little said about the relationship between GERD and stress.  Mine showed up after a couple of weeks of continuous stress at work.

Can anyone else relate as far as stress goes?

I have had all the symptoms you talk about...dizziness yes and I think it is caused by the stress of it all...I seem to not get a break from it..it is a constant thing which has gotten worse of the last 6 months...it was 5 years ago that I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia but it took many tests that were inconclusive and it just seemed that was the only thing it could be...I have switched docs a lot trying to find one that will help me with this crummy chronic thing...I am at my wits end trying to feel better, I have tried relaxation, and everything else under the sun....I am going to get the answers now...because it seems the medications that once made a little difference are no longer working and honestly I still don't understand what is wrong with me...it is frustrating, but I will let you know what I am going through and maybe you can get some feedback from your doctors as well...questions to ask and what not? I always thought I was the only one who felt like this...a curse of some sort because it is awful...

I have had a sore chest from my acid problem...so much so that when I lost my temper or exerted myself I could feel my heart pound like crazy in my chest and with each beat it felt bruised and sore.
As for the pressure in your throat ..you might want to get an ultra sound done on your throat and neck area...I too had pressure in my throat and had a hard time swallowing and it turned out to be a cyst in my throat and an enlarged thyroid gland. I have noticed with my throat it only acts up when I am tense or stressed..i guess it constricts the neck and throat more when you are stressed and I feel the pressure a lot more.
Just a few ideas from the experince which i have had.
I hope you can find out what is causing yours and get well soon.
All the best...virgo :o)
