Elevated Liver enzymes

My doctor called and told me that my enzymes were elevated.  All I know is one test should be 30-65 and it was 95 and the other was 15-50 and it was 60.  I have trouble with heat and have been taking quite a bit of pepto bismol. Can this have any effects on these numbers???

Many different things can cause elevated liver enzymes.  But I don't know if Pepto-B is one of them.  Are you overweight?  Has the doctor suggested any more tests like an ultrasound of your abdomen?
Elevated liver enzymes means your liver is inflamed.  The trick is to try and figure out what is causing it to be inflamed.

Hi, thanks for that info!!  I found that I had elevated liver enzymes on a routine blood test, and since then had a sonogram that showed fatty infiltration of the liver.  My doctor seems to be sure it's fatty liver, but from what I have been reading in some books, that can lead to serious things.  If my sonogram says this, and my enzymes are mildly elevated, and I am overweight, does that sound like fatty liver?  I worry about all the other things the elevated enzymes could be, like I was reading about autoimmune disorders, and even a more serious form of fatty liver.  Is there a way to tell the difference?  All my other blood tests came out fine, I do have high cholesterol and triglycerides too, could this be part of it too?  What do you do for it?  I am not sure what's good and what's bad for the liver.  I worry about doing any of those tonics.  Thanks in advance for any advice!!  Val

I had elevated liver enzymes for several years due to contracting Hepatitis A when I was 18 yo. About 1 year ago I read Dr Sandra Cabot's book on the Liver. I immediately followed her recommendations and my enzymes have returned to borderline normal.

Thanks to all of you for the advice!!  I actually have Dr. Sandra Cabot's book, I ordered it when I first found out my enzymes were high, and was searching around on the internet.  I have not used the powder, however, because I'm always so afraid to take anything.  I have heard how some of these liver tonics, and liver cleansers can actually make the problem worse, so I tend to just go with good, healthy eating and exercise.  I do have it, and may use it if my doctor says it's ok, but rarely will doctors suggest that kind of thing.  Thanks for all the info, I learn something new every time I come on here!  I'm nervous about the enzymes still being high, also, now that I've read it's a symptom, I feel like I'm itchy all the time.  It's probably cause I'm thinking about it, I wish I hadn't read about it!  I was just wondering though if anyone knows how fast progressing fatty liver can be.  Is it faster than HepC?  I thought it was a good thing to not have HepC, and have fatty liver instead, but does fatty liver progress faster??  I don't drink at all, but I hear you can progress to NASH without drinking.  Amazing how your whole life you associate cirrosis (cirrhosis) with drinking, and I always thought I was healthy, not knowing how bad extra weight can be.  You always hear about how your heart suffers, but you really never hear about your liver, or other organs.  There's no ceral on the market that is "liver healthy", like the ones that are "heart healthy".  I actually wish someone would come up with that, because I do like having cereal in the morning, but now I hear how that's bad cause of all the artificial vitamins in them, especially Vitamin A Palimate, which I hear is very hard on the liver.  Well, thanks again!!!  Val

I too had elevated Liver Enzymes and then found out I have fatty liver.  I just came back from the Liver Specialist and was told I need to completely quit drinking immediately.  I am really worried, and I am looking for more info.  Is it neccessary to quit drinking totally ? Is it okay to have a glass of wine now and then ?? WHat will happen if I don't stop drinking ? I am a little over weight, nothing excessive though, and I do work out. I feel pretty normal although I do feel kinda of week in the summer or heat.  The specialist wasn't very helpful as she just said she can't help me until I completely stop drinking. Help ?

I also have had high elevated liver tests with high iron levels.
I was sent for ultrasound and it came back as fatty liver. A biopsy was done to determine if the iron was in my liver. But it only showed fatty liver. I did some research and found that some individuals on oral hormone replacement can have high iron and liver test results. I talked with my doctor and we switched to a hormone patch. The iron levels are completely normal and I have only mildly elevated liver test. I too was told no drinking because of fatty liver.

I too have an elevated liver enzyme. The alkaline phosphatase or ALP.  It is caused by a bile duct stricture. Doc has me on medicine to try and relax the duct so he can get in there and try to see what is causing it. So I may be going in for another ERCP. Has anyone else out there ever had this problem?  According to my research only about 10 per cent of people have this.  I would like to know!

First let me start of by saying that I am an only child to a single parent and we are extremely close.  Last Tuesday, I went to the doctor with my mother to get a "check up" for pain that she was having in some of her joints (basically arthritis - which was determined).  During her visit, the physcian decided to take blood and rule out rhematoid arthritis (which was later determinied osteo-arthritis).  Also, the lab confirmed that her liver count was well over 400, and her cholesterol level was high.  So, to make sure, the physician decided to retake her blood and order several tests (including Hepatitis).  Well, Hepatitis was ruled out but the liver count came out to be still, over 400.  I am very concerned (as I am sure I should be) because we don't know what the problem could be.  Unfortunately, we just found out this information today (Friday), so we have to wait until Monday to find out what the plans are next, which is more than likely a liver biopsy.  My mother is, nor has ever been a drinker, smoker, drug user, blood donor, etc., so I am puzzled as to what could cause her liver count to be so high!  If anyone out there knows ANYTHING, AND I DO MEAN ANYTHING, please let me know what we possibly have in store for us.

In God I Pray,
Jo

Many medications affect the liver and usually a liver function test are ordered for monitoring.  Cholesterol lowering meds are famous for this.  Side effect is joint pain and, if the liver is affected, could produce the sand colored stools.  Are you or anyone out there with this problem.
