Esophagus, Reflux and Gastritis - Help!!

I have been diagnosed with Gastritis, Reflux and an esophagus disorder. Don't know the name of the last because the doc is going to perform an Esophagael Mobility test on me to see which of two it is. I have pain that goes from my chest straight through to my back. I have feelings of sore throat, tightening in my esophagus, lump in throat. I am eating no spices, fried foods, milk or milk products, chocolates, caffeine etc. I have lost so much weight. It seems everything I eat causes these symptoms to begin within minutes of eating anything. I am taking 8 -10 Tums Ultras daily. They wanted me to take Nexium for the acid, but didn't like what I've read about the side effects. Thinking about trying over-the-counter Pepcid Complete (It is safe while breastfeeding). They wanted me to take medications for the esophagus such as Reglan (Won't take it because the side effects are bad including depression), Propulcid or Domperidone. I have two small children, one that I am nursing. I feel I am not able to function normally because of all the discomfort and pain I am in. I want to feel healthy and normal again. Concerned Lady gave me some natural alternatives to try. Is anyone out there suffering from these type of esophagus problems? I can't believe a year ago I was perfectly fine and now I am suffering terribly from these three problems. Would like some feedback.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your comments. I have not learned anymore about the esophagus disorder. I was suppose to have the motility test on 5/9 but had to postpone it. I had my estrogen and hormones checked to see if they could be off and have caused all this since pregnancy and birth. But they came back within normal range. I asked my doctor to check my ph levels to see if they are off but she didn't want to jump to that yet. I am an anxiety disorder and depression patient. Have taken Klonopin and Prozac for years expect during the two years pregnant and additional two breastfeeding. Since the birth of my daughter one year ago today I have just fallen to pieces. I have suffered with anxiety/panic attacks and depression. The stress I believe (plus possibly the pregnancy) has caused all the problems with my stomach. I only hope with proper treatment it will all go away. I want to feel good, healthy and normal again. Not only for myself but for my 5 year old and 1 year old. They, unfortunately, are the ones to pay the price. I am going to have the motility test done before the end of the month. But I had to start my klonopin and prozac treatment last night. I am down to 2 nursings a day. I did not want to wean her for a few more months but I guess I have to in order to get my health back. I am watching very carefully what I eat. I am trying to do more of the 80/20 diet, cutting out all spices, tomatoes and sauces. I don't drink sodas, coffees, teas anyway. I drink a lot of water, not cold water, room temperature water. It helps prevent the back and chest pain from the extreme cold. Real hot foods or drinks are will cause the same thing. Keeping nongreasy, spicy foods in your stomach helps. Not letting your stomach get too empty. Cutting back on dairy products helps, especially just drinking milk.  Tums has not done much for me. I've tryed one Pepcid Complete. I may try the Maalox or Mylanta as Greg is doing.I am trying to find an over the counter before taking the Nexium they want me to take. One thing I do know that does work to help the stomach is carrot juice or cooked carrots. It coats, soothes, heals the digestive tract. The 80% alkalizing foods and 20% high acid foods ratio helps a lot.Go to the health food store and buy the slippery elm throat lozenges to help coat soothe, nourish and heal esophagus. I will let you know the results of my upcoming test and what treatment they suggest. It was also suggested to try a acupunturist by afriend who is pregnant with breast cancer. It has reduced her tumor dramatically in just three weeks. Also helps her with anxiety, depression and stomach problems. Never thought about it but going to give it a try. I was also told to get a fresh fruit juicer and start juicing fresh fruits and vegetables 9the ones that are good for me stomach 0. I was told to mix carrots, beets, apples and celry and parsley to help the stomach. Iwas told by an herbalist that alfalfa/sprouts, cabbage, celery broccoli and green vegetables are good for nourishing the mucousal linig.

i had the same symptoms with the pain going from the chest through the back. also, a tightening painful squeeze around the esophagus. no sore throat though. it began when i was pregnant and continued on after birth, when my son was an infant...i also had to go to the ER because i drank so much water (while having a reflux) that it made the sphincter (spellcheck) flare up so i threw up. acid, acid, acid...my stomach was really sore and i wasn't a happy camper. the doctor forbid me to eat chocolate, tomatoey dishes, spicy foods, not to drink soda, coffee or anything with caffeine - he's asking me to stop living!!! anyway, i modified my diet and lifestyle. i tried not to stress too much because it would flare up again. i thought that i had some control over it by definitely watching what i eat and what time i eat. also, try to just drink water, nothing else but! eat mostly, but not limited to: crackers, bread, toast...even pretzels. if i feel an attack coming on (not during), i start drinking water. then i burp (a lot). still don't know what the connection is but i do know that burping alleviates the pain. i've been free from attacks for almost 3 yrs. now just by always having a bottle of water with me (don't leave home without it). yesterday though, i felt it coming but just had to eat a couple of pepperoni pizzas...and that did it. in my case, i have to take tagamet or zantac. my stomach would defiantly laugh at mylanta...doesn't work. i for one, am not fond of taking medicine either. i did learn my lesson to use more self-control with my diet, for my family's sake. good luck to you.

I have similar pinching chest pain and constant dull pain which goes through to my back. I have had my gallbladder removed, my throat scoped, blood tests ran for liver and pancreas problems. Heart ultrasound, stress tests and another ultrasound to see if they missed a stone. Which by the way I had one tiny stone and they removed my gallbladder. They did an upper mri to look for cancer and AFTER ALL THAT they came to the conclusion that it's Acid Reflux.

Then came the drug Protonix.....

After 9 weeks of 2 (40mgs.) Protonix daily

Hello,
I have had similar problems and I have been diagnosed with GERD. If I eat any meals and lay down withing 3 or 4 nours i suffer the whole next day or longer. DO NOT TAKE PROPULSID. I thought it was taken off the market. I believe it can cause heart problems. My doctor had prescribed it for me several years ago. It basically pushes the food through your system faster. Do you have trouble swallowing food. Does it ever seem to get stuck? I found all this out due to going to the Dr for food getting stuck. I have what is called a Schatski's ring or esophageal ring. The treatment was to (under anesthesia of course)insert a ballon device down the esophagus and blow it up dilating this ring. That was over 5 years ago and I am doing pretty well with it. I'm not saying this is what you have but the GERD that i do have was made 10 times worse by this swallowing problem. I was on Prilosec but have started using Pepcid Complete with good results. Good luck to youand if I can be of any other help post a message. Give the babies a hug for me *SMILE*
Take care

Have they checked your pancrease? That will at times cause extreme pain that goes right to the back. I take protonix for the GERD and gastritis. It's been two weeks and I feel great!
I hope something works for you ;)

No I have tried the tums/rolaids and they don't work for me, the mylanta and maalox do. And yes I get the chest pains that go to the back and have even been to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack they said was GERD after all the test and they gave me some drink that was awesome but you cannot buy ..  figures..it had some prescription drugs mixed in , it was kind of a cocktail.. but didn't taste quick as good but the results were awesome. I also get Palpitations sometimes but my heart has been checked out by a cardiologist and all is fine.. Its becoming a common symptom with Gastro disorders where you get palps from what the doctors say. Sometimes I get a chest pain and right after hear like a gurgle or something like some gas is moving. it freaks me out when i get the chest pains or palps. The EDG is making me very nervous but everybody says its nothing..  we'll see.  I too get the lump in the throat, its never sore though..  I use 2 pillows now and it seems to help.
I also definatly have had a tightening in the upper throat and Esophagus area.. almost like 2 hands squeezing my Esophagus but thats only in the morning and it goes away pretty quick after I get up and drink some water.

Mine started a year ago and sound simiar to yours. I take prilosec which I don't like because it causes bloating and I feel prevents some nutrients from food to absorb properly. I take Mylanta or Maalox which works well. Im due for a test next tuesday where they take a camera down my throat. Mine started out like yours but got worse before i thought I was having some kind of heart attack and went to emergency room. They figured out it was GERD and not the heart because the symptoms can be very similar. Good luck. And also Stress/Anxiety can cause these symptoms also.

Thanks for your feedback. I am not sure if it is from the pregnancy/delivery, or estrogen levels being off. It is just strange that it all started after I gave birth to my daughter. I do agree that stress and anxiety can definitely cause and aggravate a lot of these symptoms. Have you tried Tums Ultras (strongest strength)? I was just wondering if the Mylanta and Maalox work better than the Tums Ultra. Do you also suffer from pain in the chest through to back? What about the tightening, or lump or sore throat feeling in your esophagus? I also had the EDG(name is too long)on 4/11 and they found reflux and gastritis. I had reddening in my throat. The procedure was no problem. But they have to do the Esophageal Motility test on me in the next week. I am dreading it terribly. They insert a small catheter through your nose into your stomach and slowly withdraw it while you are swallowing water. They measure the contraction and relation of the muscles at the start and end of your esophagus, as well as, the squeezing peristalsis that pushes food down into your stomach. I am afraid of having a panic attack while they do this. The sensation of something being in my throat is not a good thing for me. They are checking for a spasm or motility disorder of the esophagus. A lot of foods, drinks, even medicine I swallow immediately or within minutes causes the symptoms to act up. Sometimes worse than others. He says the chest/back pain and discomfort in throat are all the esophagus.
