My sympayhy to all of you. Me too.
I had gall stones removed in 1998 but I think I had gastritis all along. I was and am still having the burning in the area under the ribs and radiating through by back between the waist and sholder blades. I have episodes of vomiting at least twice a week and for about 7 hours at a time. I can not eat food and live on Slim Fast liquid. It has lots of vitamins and nutrients. It has around 200 calories so I drink 6 or so a day.
None of the acid blockers worked for me and I had alergic reactions to some of them. I finally went to Wal-Mart and bought their generic for TAGAMET. It worked better than anything that had been prescribed. I am now going through H-Pylori therapy and hope it will solve some of my problems.
I collect rocks and gemstones and make jewelry so I don't have time for this and would be much happier without the pain.
For all of you who have not been checked for H-pylori bacteria you should insist on it. There are also blood tests that can be done to see if there is cancer like Ca-125 to check for ovarian cancer and Ca 19-9 for pancreatic cancer. You have to ask for that too.
Get on the net and reserch your symptoms and disease. You have more time than your doc does and its your body, your pain, your life.
Good luck to all of you

You state you "are going for a scope".  How were you originally diagnosed with a gastric ulcer?

If the doctor is guessing, he may be wrong.  My doctor thought seven years ago that I had GERD.  Four years ago I had my first scope and I had mild gastritis, no GERD.  I just had another in July after suffering for few months with severe symptoms and I have now graduated to chronic gastritis, no GERD.

How do I stand it!!!!  It's not easy.  I was pretty sick and didn't have a good summer.  It's only recently that I'm feeling well, not one hundred percent but much better.

I lost 15lbs, couldn't eat or sleep, was in constant discomfort and thought for sure I had stoamch cancer.

It if wasn't for this forum and another I go to, I would have driven myself crazy with worry.  It helps to know that you are not alone and others are coping with the same symptoms you have.

First thing I would do is start eating smaller meals and keep it simple.  Try the aloe juice, it may burn at first but it's helpful.  I can't take Tylenol and only take Excedrin.  I woke today with a horrible headache and had no choice - so far I'm okay.  Try to avoid this stuff until you feel you're healing.

Nexium made me worse.  Protonix didn't help me.  Prevacid seems to be the PPI that works.  But, it's not cookie cutter - what works for me may not work for you.  But, I have heard others say they had a hard time with Nexium so you may want to ask your doctor if you can try another PPI.  Sometimes an OTC acid blocker helps in between if the symptoms are really bad - you can try this before bedtime.  I take two Zantac if I really feel bad.  A definite no no is not to go to bed or lie down 2-3 hrs after you eat.  And take your PPI a half hour before your meals, not before bedtime.

Drink lots of water, that helps.  Avoid cola and drinks with caffine, even decaf may bother you so trial and error.

Let me know if you have any questions.  I'm not an expert, only going by my own experience.  For now, if you take vitamins, stop.  I found them to be irritating.  And, you will get better, I was in your place and never thought I would feel good again.  It takes time, sometimes months, in most cases a good year.

And, go to www.heartburn.com   A very good forum and the people there are wonderful.

Hi Nanci, yes I am going for a scope.  I have been on prilosec for 3 months and also I took the antibiotics for the h pylori.
Today I went back because I feel terrible.  I had a headache last week and made the mistake of taking 2 aspirin.  What a nono
all the pain and burning and nasuea came back.  Now today I started nexium and also I have ibs which now I take zelnorm for.
I think that you are on the right track with the gastris.  Its really hard with food.  I eat toast in the morning no butter or marg.  I have rice for lunch and chicken broth and by supper my belly hurts and I cant eat.  I have lost 15 pds in 2 months.  How do you stand it.  Thanks for replying kaylea.

Kaylea, how were you diagnosed the first time, by scope?

It sounds to me like you have gastritis caused by the ulcer.  I have chronic gastritis and foods like wheat and rice irritate my stomach.  And it's possible that the h-pylori wasn't totally eliminated.

Some of the things I do is drink aloe juice before meals, just a few ounces.  Chew DGL before meals (you can buy in health food store); I avoid things like pasta, rice, meat, any foods difficult to digest.  In fact, last nite, was the first time I are pasta since May.  I don't feel horrible today but I don't feel wonderful either.  I did have some burning when I woke this morning.

I avoid completely alcohol, tomatoes products of any kind, coffee and caffine, meat, white breads and most desserts, spicey and hot foods.  Dairy doesn't seem to bother me at all so I eat ice cream, etc.

I also drink smoothies in the AM which I make myself - very healthy and I've learned that I can enjoy a smoothie driving to work the way I did a cup of coffee.  I drink tea alot now and enjoy it.

I wonder why you are not on some kind of PPI like Prevacid, Protonix, etc.  I take 30mg of Prevacid a day (15mg in the Am, 15mg in the PM) You really need to heal the problem and then switch your life style for maintenance.
