Liver Failure? Prognosis?

Hello,

My brother is a long-term drug addict. Lately his coloring has turned grey and he now has black blotches on his face. He also falls asleep during the course of a normal conversation.

He refuses to seek medical attention. My guess is that his 30+ years of drug addiction have caught up with him. What is the prognosis?

Marion, it would be hard to guess without him seeing a doctor.
A simple blood test could show if he is in liver failure. For an explanation of how doctors diagnose liver failure, go to

http://www.cyberdiet.com/modules/lv/disease/medical/dx.html

Also---We have a cirrhosis and liver failure website at

http://homepages.about.com/imkindly/cirrhosis/
There is a page there called "Cirrhosis links", with links to good information on liver disease and symptoms.

I hope that you can get him to go to a doctor.
Good luck to you.
