PAINFUL BURPING

MY WIFE, A 40 YEAR OLD SLIGHTLY OVERWEIGHT PERSON, HAS EXPERIENCED MANY MONTHS(5+) OF EXCESSIVE BURPING. THE DOCTORS HAVE TRIED ALL TYPES OF DRUGS AND DONE MANY TESTS. SOME OF WHICH ARE VERY COSTLY AND PAINFUL. STILL NO RELIEF. MY WIFE ALSO HAS PAIN IN HER LEFT SHOULDER THAT WHEN RUBBED, WILL PRODUCE A BURP OR MANY, AND THE PAIN EASES TEMPORARILY. THE DOCTORS ARE UNABLE TO FIND CAUSE AND MY WIFE IS AT HER WITS END. SHE HAS BECOME DEPRESSED AND I BELIEVE MIGHT BE SUICIDAL OVER THIS. PLEASE HELP US IF YOU CAN, WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE ELSE TO TURN TO.

Dear AL,
Burping is usually the result of swallowing excessive amounts of air.  This can occur if one is a 'mouth breather'.  Excessive air can also occur if one talks or drinks liquids when eating.  Certain foods can also cause gas e.g. cabbage, cauliflower.  Obviously, the first step is to have an ENT doctor verify that the upper airway is normal.  Avoiding liquids during meals, not drinking with a straw, not talking when eating are steps to be tried,  Avoid gas forming foods.
You should also ask the doctor if your wife's symptoms could be related to reflux.  If she has esophageal reflux, a different treatment plan would be necessary.
