Since you have an HMO doctor who's not listening, I'd ask him for a referral for a gastroenterologist or G.I. specialist, or even demand one if you have too.  If he refuses to give you one, then I'd call your insurance company and tell them your problem, even giving them your doctor's name, and ask them how you get a referral.  If they are not cooperative ask to speak to the supervisor and threaten them if you have to (I work for an insurance co.).  It sounds like you might have irritable bowel syndrome, which can alternate with diarrhea and constipation and abdominal bloating is consistent.  But, you definitely need a specialist who deals with the stomach/bowel area to evaluate the problem.  Good luck.

Dear Pat/Patriot,

Great advice! :-)
Thank you for sharing it! I too like holistic health, but will use "allopathic" health, in emergencies. However, I always seem to go back to holistic stuff in the long run.

I do think that a person has to be careful, with medications (bad side effects), etc., and even with holistic health. There can be bad interactions between herbs, foods, medications, vitamins, minerals, etc, depending on a person's illnesses, condition, etc..

Some examples are:

People who have high blood pressure shouldn't take large doses of Vitamin E. It could raise their blood pressure.

People who had rheumatic heart disease shouldn't take large doses of Vitamin E. It could dislodge scar tissue on heart valves, resulting in the equivalent of a moving clot (embolus)!

People on blood thinning medications may want to not overdo on Vitamin E, which has a tendency to prevent clotting (good for normal people, bad for those on blood thinners).

People on blood thinning meds shouldn't overdo on Red Clover blossom tea, which has a tendency to thin the blood. People who are not on blood thinning meds might like Red Clover blossom tea, if they had cancer, because Red Clover blossom tea is said to help fight cancer.

People who have a tendency to clot abnormally, should avoid taking any supplements that contain Vitamin K (which promotes clotting), and should avoid eating foods that are hugely high in Vitamin K, such as brussels spouts.

People who are hypothyroid should avoid overdoing on vegetables in the cabbage (mustard) family, because these veggies in too large an amount can depress the body's production of thyroxin.

People taking medications should avoid drinking grapefruit juice, because it is thought that some types of flavenoids in this particular citrus juice can interfere with the normal "detoxifiction" of certain medications, and the result can be a large, unintended overdose (can be fatal) of the medication.

People who have heart or circulatory problems should avoid taking shark cartilage supplements, because the shark cartilage can prevent the formation of collateral (extra) blood vessels, which heart & circulatory patients need. On the other hand, the shark cartilage is said to starve tumors, by cutting off the tumor's blood (food) supply.

People with weak or damaged livers need to avoid overdoing on fat soluble vitamins, such as Vitamin A, D, E, K. Too much of these vitamins can cause a toxic buildup in the liver, especially in a damaged liver.

On the other hand, I've seen people die rather than try something different (holistic health), and, of course the opposite is true. Bad medicine, whether allopathic or holistic can be dangerous or fatal.

I am for holistic health, when it is done with open eyes, carefully, knowing (if possible) the potential for side effects.

I'm with you. I LOVE probiotics, digestive enzymes, etc.

I prefer (when safe, & effective) holistic ideas such as organic foods, homeopathy, some herbs, acupuncture, supplements of vitamins, minerals, etc.

I have found, from experimenting on myself, that sometimes certain holistic things didn't work out for me. Maybe I developed a sensitivity to them, or ? One example is psyllium. Another is betaine hydrochloride.

Everyone is different & unique, in their reactions to various allopathic & holistic treatments. Listen to your body's reactions.

I try to keep an open mind. Good luck to all! :-)

I am not a sales person nor a promoter of any products, I am just like the rest of us who are suffering from some gastrinal problem. A few months ago, I had chronic diareha 4-5 times a day for 3 months straight. I've had a lot of tests and alot of useless medicine prescriptions. My mom bought a herb called "Full Spectrum Plant Enzymes" by Organika. It took about 2 weeks, and it stopped, completly. I have been diareha free for three weeks now and I have my energy back. I don't know if it works for everyone or everything, but it really worked for my digestive problem. It only cost me $12 Canadian. If you try it and it works let me know, mabye others can benifit too, GOOD LUCK
