As I understand it, the first thing they inject is saline to make the liver, pancreas & GB shaow up. If it takes ore than 60 min for the GB to appear, that means your GB is slow functioning. If it doesn't appear at 90 min, it needs to comes out ASAP.

The 2nd thing they inject is the cck, kerovac. It is done after they are able to get a visual on the GB. If at 90 min it doesn't show up, they do not inject the kerovac.

As I understand it there is a shortage on kerovac in the USA. Gee, with these techs messing up the tests, I can see why.

This Hida Scan, or AKA Pipida Scan is a Nuclear Test.
If your test DOES show positive on GB, I'd get dramatic with my doctor about the pain. I have a high tolerance to pain. I was once criticized for driving myself to the appointment too. Doc said "It must not hurt that bad." Ever since that remark, I have a friend take me!!
Good Luck, let us know what you find out.

As far as the rate of injecting the kerovac, I did ask the 2nd tech who did this test and she said she had NEVER heard of injecting it that fast. They use to inect it over a 15 min time frame & it caused the patient to have much discomfort. Of course we know that the term "much discomfort" really means: Hurts like a SOB!!

During my first test in 2001 with the injectio rate of 7-10 min I experienced a very very hot feeling over my entire body. So hot that the tech called for a doctor in the ER of the hospital. She kept putting cold wet paper towels all over me. The minute she put the cold towel on it became warm. I also was experiencing real bad squeezing-like contactures in my GB area. I thik the tech was ore panicked than me. When the ER doctor got to the testing room, about 5 min later, most of my symptoms were diminishing. I was just crying like a baby. The tech then read the test & said everythng was normal. I started crying again and asked what could it possibly be then? They both said liver or pancreas problems. That just made me worry more.

Then I had an abnormal mamogram that revealed my 16 yr silicone breast implants were severely ruptured. So they blamed the pain on that. After the explant, the GB pain returned seeral months ater with a vengence.

I switched GP's. The new GP looked at m old tests & records and said "Why do you stil have your GB? Your Hida scan indicates that something wasn't normal." I had the test repeated as stated in my other post.

I now wonder if the injection of the kerovac done in th"fast rate fashion" can cause any harm to you. The 2nds tech had no answers for me as to what or if this can cause anything.

I called the Radiology Dept where I had the 1rst test done & spoke with the head of the dept. and explained what happened & asjed these same questions. He said he'd return my call. He hasn't so far. Perhaps he'd return a call from my attorney.

I am still mad to this day about the way I have been treated by hospital personnell & techs. They may see this stuff everyday; But for those of us going thru these tests it can be frightening. Especially if you have to go to them alone like I did. Once in awhile you get a good one who explains things to you.

If I ever DO get answer as to what does happen to you with the fast injection rate, I will post.

Now, will someone PLEASE scroll down a few dates to around 8-2-02 and read my question/post about this LowerRight Quadrant Pain and diarrhea. I know I have adhesions in this area, but I still think I have chronic appendicitis. HELP...LOL
Thank you, Anna

They are not suppose to inject all at once. Mine was injected over a 45 minute time frame.

I had the Hida scan done in April 2001. It was normal, so they said. Upon repeating  in late June 2002, my GB function rate was found to be at a 3% function rate. I also noticed the 2nd time I had this test, it was donea little different. The kerovac that was injected was injected over a 30 min time frame instead of a 7-10 min time fram as done in the 1rst test.
After the 2nd test I was sent to a Gen Srg office immed. I had the GB removed 4 days later.
The surgeon said my GB had multiple adhesions & was very diseased.
The last 2 -3 weeks with my GB, I still never got the bad nausea like alot of people do. I had more of just PAIN symptoms. Severe Pain in my upper right abdomen(right nder my right breast), and pain in my upper right back & shoulder area. Pains(Attacks) would last anywhere from 5 min to 3 hours.

I DID however have another strange symptom that started 2-3 weeks before GB removal; It was diarrhea, loose watery stools,(3-7 BM) in the morning, then about 1-2 in the afternoon. I had pain in my Lower Right Quadrant too, so I suspected appendicitis. Surg said it was possible, but rare to have both. During surgery, he tried to view the appendix but could not see it due to adhesions from previous surgeries (2 lapros to lazer endro & total hyster). He insists that diahrea is not common with appendicitis. And he has gone back & forth with "chronic appendicitis."
The ONLY other change that took place with ME was 2-3 weeks before my GB surgery, I switched from Premarin HRT to Estrace. Today I am switching from Estrace to Cenestin.

I will post if this makes any difference. I have had this diarrhea for the past 36 hours pretty bad. It had let up for abut 7 days. No diet change; No greasy food, just mainly Romain lettuce & bread. This ast 36 hours has been the worst.

The Hida scan shows how well the gallbladder is contracting or squeezing out the sludge. Ask your Dr what percentage it is contracting. It should be at least 40%. Under that 40% is concidered a nonfunctioning gallbladder. Sludge will cause pain if the gallbladder is unable to squeeze it out.

no they didn't  at least I don't think they did and since I had my first attack I have really cut back on fatty foods I did eat minimal fatty foods and had more attacks I just don't know what to think because my primary care doc is insisting that it isn't the sludge in  my gall bladder but I know of 4 people that got their gallbladder removed because of sludge and they are fine now. another friend of mine had the same tests that I did and they came back normal and when she had her gallbladder out it was full of stones does anyone know why they wouldn't show up on an ultrasound

Did the ultrasound show any fatty infiltration of the liver? If you have any fatty infiltration of the liver (fatty liver) then you should cut way back on the fatty foods that you are eating.  I stopped eating all hydrogenated fat/oil and the pain in my right side has gone away.  I had the pain in my right side for years and years.  They kept checking my gall bladder and it was always fine.  (Hydrogenated fat is found in things like margarine, shortening, and lots of packaged foods like crackers.)
