my daughter has had 3 years of diarhea

My 3 year old goes next week to have a biopsy of her intestant.  She has had diarhea accompanied with her whole life.  After 3 years of tests, the doctors think they finally know what is wrong.  I want to do some research but can't remember the name of the disease.  It is an allergy to oats, grains and flour.  I am hoping you can tell me the name of this disease and maybe help me to find more information on it.
thank you
Kelli

It's also called "Celiac Disease", a type of gluten intolerance. If your daughter has Celiac Disease, she can start to get better soon, by AVOIDING "GLUTEN".

AVOID THESE FOODS WHICH CONTAIN GLUTEN, and read labels to avoid "glutenous" ingredients:

WHEAT, RYE, OATS, BARLEY, and BUCKWHEAT all contain gluten. What's left to eat, you might ask? The grains that DON'T HAVE GLUTEN, are RICE, CORN, and MILLET:

BROWN RICE is more nutritious than white rice. Health food stores sell organic brown rice, and even brown rice pastas, and brown rice cereals.

CORN should be avoided, even tho it's gluten-free, because many people are allergic to corn.

MILLET may or may not agree with Celiac patients, so stick to brown rice, or avoid grains altogether temporarily, and then later, you can give your daughter brown rice.

CELIAC DISEASE destroys the tiny finger-like projections in the small intestine. These are called "villi", and the villi normally secrete (give off) digestive enzymes.

When these villi are destroyed by the "allergic" reaction to gluten, very little food gets digested, and very few "nutrients" get absorbed. This creates a "mal-absorption" problem, with vitamin deficiencies, mineral deficiencies, etc. and with MUCH diarrhea. The Celiac patient becomes less healthy, and gets sick more often.

READ YOUR LABELS CAREFULLY! If you can't pronounce any ingredient, or you don't know what it is, DON'T LET YOUR DAUGHTER EAT IT! Cook from "scratch", so you will know exactly what she's eating.

Many Celiac patients have a LACTOSE(milk sugar) INTOLERANCE because when the "villi" are destroyed by eating gluten, no LACTASE enzyme is secreted to help digest milk sugar in milk products. So AVOID MILK PRODUCTS, until the "villi" grow back, which takes a while.

Yogurt is a good food, but it is a MILK product. Buy some "bifido-bacteria" (milk free) that is meant for a child. It is sold at health food stores, and can be mixed with clean water or juice. Keep the bifido-bacteria container refrigerated.

The "bifido-bacteria" are BENEFICIAL (FRIENDLY) bacteria ("PRO-BIOTICS") that a child needs, but which are killed off by ANTI-BIOTICS.

Look up "Celiac Disease" on "the web", and you will find many kind caring folks who can talk to you and help you and your daughter through this. SHE IS NOT ALONE. Celiac disease if way more common than was formerly thought. THERE IS HOPE AND HELP!

Very very soon after she STOPS EATING GLUTEN, she will begin to heal up the small intestine, she will feel better, stop having diarrhea, improve her digestion, etc.

Ask your doc about gluten-free VITAMINS, MINERALS, AND DIGESTIVE ENZYMES, to help her recover faster. She can take these WITH food and water.

Avoid junk foods, and avoid soda pop. She needs healthy foods now, to get better faster!

The reason I know a bunch about Celiac Disease, is because we have a friend who has it, and he taught us all about it! When we visit him, for a "pot luck dinner", we have to cook a "gluten-free" dish! It got easier once we knew what it was all about.

Good luck!

Sincerely, Concerned lady

I think you may be talking about Spru (Spruce)..not sure of the spelling. I have a friend that has it. It can be controlled by strict diet.
