rectal bleeding

I have had rectal bleeding on and off for 2 years.  One year ago I went through a battery of tests , sygmoidoscopy, barium enema, catscan without any diagnosis.  The symptoms include; bleeding both dripping in the bowl and significantly on the paper, and loose bowel movements (allways like diarehea).  I go through periods, (week or so at a time) where I have as many as four or five painfull BMs a day.  I often feel like I am about to have an accident, yet am unable to have a BM.  The Blood is allmost allways present, (9 out of 10)and the Bowell Movement itself is painfull.

the symtoms come and go in severity, but never completely go away.

any advice?  I am fustrated with the Doctors inability to offer any diagnosis.  What could wrong.  Is this a reason to find another doctor, (I belong to an HMO) or could this condition be a fact of my life I have to get used to?

i would also get another doctor, they should keep going with you until they find out what is troubling you, ask about a colonoscopy, it is an anal scope, not painful at all, and very worth it,  i was having the same problems but not as severe and she did all the tests, finally we did the colonoscopy and found that i have crohn's disease, and now i have meds for it and am a happy camper.   good luck and don't give up there is a doctor out there who will know and will find out.  best wishes to you and your health.

Did they NOT give you a colonoscopy?! You could have Crohn's disease which wouldn't necessarily get picked up on the sigmoidoscopy, barium enema, or CT scan. I would maybe look for a new doctor to keep pursuing this with. Your symptoms are not normal and you need some answers.

Good luck to you.

Rectal bleeding can be a major sign of ulcers especially if it is detected in stoll. It took 7 years until one day i passed out not knowing this. Please make sure you be persistent in telling your Doctor this is not normal.

It is unusual that your doctor cannot diagnose your problem.
My advice would be to see someone else as this problem ahs been ongoing.
I have a cousin whom I have written about in this forum who was just been diagnosed with colitis. Her symptons are almost identical to yours. She was first diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome but further tests revieled the colitis. Hers was left undedected too long and her bowel had ruptured and had to be removed completely, she now has to wear a colostomy bag almost indefinately. Don't wait any longer.
