whippel procedure

A frieng of mine will be operated in few days - Whippel operation.
I've read a lot about it. I didn't find anywhere why there is a need to remove the gallblader. Please answer me with all the details.

I heard that a whippel was a drastic proceedure, also that removes most of the organs in the abdomen including the stomache, pancreas, bladder, colon.

I thought the whipple procedure was to remove part of the pancreas?  Has your friend already had his gallbladder removed?  It is necessary to remove the gallbladder when it isn't working correctly, or has stopped working altogether.  Only about 5% of the people having it removed have trouble afterward.
