Brain Damage/Cognitive disorder after massive blood loss

by Cherris, Jun 11, 2007 12:00AM
I suffered massive blood loss after breast reconstructive surgery in 1995. I did not work fulltime for years after that surgery due to other medical conditions.  I tried to go back to work fulltime in 2005 and I lost several job because I could not comprehend the job's duties in a timely manner. Because of loosing jobs I saw a neurophysiologist in Dec '05 to help me understand what was happening to me.  He tested me and diagnosed me with AADHD, cognitive disorder and depression, etc…  I am working now and have been on my present job for 7 months.  My cognitive disorder is very noticeable to me and to my manager.  I have extreme difficulty processing information. I was tested in the 90's and I had an IQ of 126.  I was tested in Dec '05 and my IQ was 75.  Is it possible that the massive blood loss damaged my brain?  I believe very strongly that it did.  I saw a neurologist today.  He threw out the terms dementia, Alzheimer’s and depression.  Depression…is it likely that depression could cause such a severe drop in my IQ and also caused my cognitive disorder?  If not depression, dementia, Alzheimer’s, then what else could caused this decline in my mental ability?   What test or lab can I ask my doctor to do to help me understand my disorder and its etiology?  Is it reasonable that I did not know I suffered with this disorder for such a long time. I am 54, post menopausal and have hypo-thyroid disorder.
