Identification in a Disaster

by caregiver222, Feb 23, 2009 02:01PM
My recommendation is for everyone to obtain THREE copies of their driver's licence. One to carry. One to store in the house in a safe place. The third to mail for safekeeping to a relative in another state.

Positive identification is often one of the first things lost in a flood or fire. In the event motor vehicle offices are closed (as was the case in New Orleans) obtaining new identification becomes almost impossible. Even if these places are open the corroborative documents (birth certificate, etc.) may not be. Don't count on the computers being able to retrieve your image. This results in a cascade of events, including being unable to cash a check or obtain funds from a relative through Western Union.
