Jerry Cans - Fuel Storage

by caregiver222, Sep 05, 2009 02:02PM
Jerry cans were originally metal, and then the army switched to plastic.

They are idea for storing emergency supplies of fuel, both diesel and gasoline.

That means you can just store them nearby and use them when when necessary.

That wonderful federal government in the United States, guided by the Kyoto treaty and advice from space aliens, wrote CFR 264.175  CFR means "Code of Federal Regulations".

No longer can one just throw twenty jerry cans in the back of a pick-up to provide fuel for the pumpers stopping the forest fire. Or store them in the open in an area of emergency operations.

You need a "special containment unit", NSN 8145-010515-6478

Such a unit is manufactured by Bowhead Corporation and sells for an outrageous $230.00

That price is absurd. But to legally transport jerry cans you require a properly approved container.

It is a stackable plastic unit, with handles, in which you can nestle four jerry cans filled with gas side by side and store or transport them. The theory is that this unit will contain fumes and potential leakage.

Believe it or not, I have been told that combat units in Afghanistan have been thwarted in having fuel deliveries because perfumed princes have not certified the movement of non-contained jerry cans.

In the event of a disaster, and you are hauling jerry cans in the back of your pick-up, and are stopped by a FEMA official, remember the rule established by Breaker Morant.
