Nearsigted andLossof Glasses

by caregiver222, May 09, 2009 10:49AM
One of the trauma's in a disaster on those with extreme nearsightedness is the fear of "losing their glasses". For those who are very nearsighted, fright and terror can result from misplaced glasses.

In the event of a disaster, there is a good chance your glasses will be damaged.

As part of a disaster plan you should have 4 (four) pairs of glasses. Not two. Not three, but four. And they shouldall be in different places, and ideally, in different locations (a neighbor's home, for example, and the trunk of the family car).

If you are nearsighted, "emergency glasses" can be made by punching small holes in a piece of paper and putting the paper in front of your eyes. Try this right now.You will find your vision is corrected to 20/20. Amazing.

You can do this by making a fist and peering through the small hole made by your fingers in a true emergency. It works.

One pin-hole in the paper will do, but lots are better.

There is another way. Try living without your glasses for a month. Or two. Or three.

You will find, as the atrophied muscles strengthen, therewill be a tremendous improvement in your vision.

Those who have been nearsighted since childhood, and who have worn glasses continually, will be very pleased at the result.

In addition, if you are considering laser surgery, do not have the surgery until you have not worn glasses for three months. The muscles will strengthen and the correction provided by the laser will be appropriate. If you get such a procedure the day after you take off your glasses, the muscles will not achieve their proper tone. And because they will be forced to accomodate a situation where your eyesight is clear when they are relaxed there will be a degradation in your ability to shift focus from near to far objects, important to aprofessional driver or pilot. Unless you stop wearing glasses for an extended period before Lasix or laser surgery, you will lose forever an important tool for survival.
