broad spectrum antibiotics

I have seen "broad spectrum antibiotics" recommended to be stockpiled for emergency.

Are antibiotics in the US available OTC? If so, what are some brands? If not, can anyone point to a reliable source?

How much quantity is suggested for a household, per person? Also, what's the approximate shelf life?

Any other considerations?

Antibiotics are not available in the United States without a physician's precription. And most physicians disapprove of someone keeping an "emergency supply". Recent changes in the law permit HIV patients to obtain anti-biotics without a prescriptionj provided they fill out a form. There are little "underground" pharmacies,  You have to fill out a form (put down any name).

As for which antibiotics and in what quantities that is a: "how many angels are on the head of a pin" question.

Pennicilan is obsolete.

CIPRO is effective against the unlikely Anthrax attack.

Cephalaxin is good for tooth and gum infections.

Third generation cephalosporins for lung infections.

And aminoglycides, such as tobramycin.

Do a google search on antibiotics. An analysis of the various types is beyond the scope of this post.

Store them in an ammo box (they have rubber water-tight seals) with a dissicant inside.

Shelf life varies. Count on a year.

If some takes antibiotics and you are short have them drink their own urine. Most of the antibiotics is excereted with most of its bacteria fighting ability intact.

Take the pills with grapefruit juice, which extends their half-life.

Physicians are extremely reluctant to supply lay people with the "latest" antibiotic, even though it may be the most effective one.

As for the quantity, certainly enough for one treatment per person.

Again, are we talking about a flood or the nuclear holocaust.

For doomsday scenarios we obviously need higher quantities.
