11 yr old terrier with leg and shoulder problem

Hi, I have an 11 yr old miniature schnauser. A few months ago he would act like his left foot hurt or hold it up. We couldn't see anything wrong with nails etc. so we thought he was just getting some arthritis. It would come and go. He walks runs, plays etc. This morning I came downstairs and he was sitting on the sofa with his left leg and shoulder in what looks to be a double jointed thing. Was sticking out and just nothing I have ever seen before and I have had many dogs. I am going to have to take him to the vet obv. but what does this sound like to you? He has always been healthy and never has had any problems. Thanks in advance, Stephanie

Is your miniature schnauzer still doing this?  I have had 2 mini's; one lived to aged 12 and one to 17.  My current mini is 3.  Occasionally my mini who lived to 17 would develop a limp and the vet said it probably came from jumping of some sort.  He said we shouldn't encourage it at all.  I remember a couple of times he wouldn't even move from the backyard; it was like he couldn't walk anymore!  The next day he was fine....

I'm really not sure about this.  An ACL injury can cause the on and off limping on a leg, especially if it is just slightly torn.  But I don't know about the double jointed looking thing.  I did have a bulldog that would sit or lie on his front elbows which looked extremely bizarre and painful but seemed comfortable for him.
Good luck and please let us know what the vet says.
