12wk old french bulldog has prolapsed her rectum 12 times, what to do?

Hi there,

We are posting with hopes that someone can help us with advice or insight on how to handle our new puppies issue
She is a 12 week old frenchie that has an amazing temperament and is full of energy
Since we got her she has prolapsed her rectum over a dozen times.
We have consulted with out vet and they have placed a purse string suture with hopes to hold the rectum in. They have tested her for parasites several times and all have come back negative. We have dewormed her 2 times with panacur
We put her on laxatives, painkillers and a hypoallergenic diet by (royal canin medical)
They took her suture out after being in for 7 days and shortly after she prolapsed again.
They have since put a new suture in and have given her metrodiazanole to treat colitis (inflammation of the large intestines)
It has been now 2 weeks since this all began and she still continues to strain with every poop. It takes her between 5-15minutes everytime
The vets are stumped and I am at a loss for words
We are not in the position to spend much more on surgery (colopexy) which is what the vet is reccomending if this treatment of metrodiazanole doesn't work
Please help, any advise would be much appreciated!
Thanks again
Esther

Thanks for the advice Margot.  Yes we do have a health guarantee and will be discussing options with the breeder soon.
No X rays done yet and we have been adding water to her food to ensure that she stays hydrated. She has a suture in right now but it will be removed in 5 days, not looking forward to that as she is still straining quite hard with each poop.  She has soft to semisoft stool so I don't understand why she is still straining.  :(

I am sorry to read this.  Is it the rectum or the intestine that is coming out?sorry to say, if this cannot be corrected or the tissue dies, more surgery us needed.  Try to keep the area clean and moist and don't ket her lick it.  Did the Vet give you or suggest a stool softener?  If the pup can't deficate properly, it can get very sick. Panacur is a good wormer, used it for years on my dogs.
Did  the Vet do any x-rays?  I suggest you keep her on a soft diet and perhaps add extra water and maybe feed her smaller portions more often.
There really is no way to manage this at home.

I know you are now attached to this puppy but have you contacted the breeder you got her from?  Did you get any health guarantee?   As having bred dogs in past years, if this ended up to be a major issue that would be life threatening or require major surgery (worst case scenario) with confirmation in writing from a Vet, I would offer a replacement puppy, if I had one then, a refund with the return of the puppy or a partial refund should you decide you can't give it up.

Will hope that this can be resolved!!
Perhaps someone on the Forums can offer other advice but I know of no other options.

Please keep us updated and good luck with your little one.
