I am of the same mine as ginger899 and Whtroze. If it's much heavier than normal then it sounds like it might be pyometra and not a heat cycle. If it IS pyometra, since she has a discharge it's an open pyo, which is less dangerous than a closed pyo where there is no discharge. In a closed pyo there is no way for the infected uterus to drain and there is the danger that it will rupture and send the poisons into her abdominal cavity, like a burst appendix in a person. PLEASE get her to the vet TODAY to check this out because pyometra CAN become a matter of life and death, and it can happen very suddenly. I wouldn't mess around with this if I were you.
Ghilly
please take her to the vet asap. this is not normal and as stated by ginger899 sounds like it could be pyometra. Pyometra can become life threatening if left untreated, so please get her to a vet for treatment or even just to make sure if its not this.
Good luck and hope she is ok. Please keep us updated.
No this isn't normal. If I were you I would take her in to be checked out by the vet. It is just possible she has Pyometra (an inflammation of the womb) If so, then the only good solution is surgery to remove her womb.
You say she is in heat? Have you noticed any unusual discharge from her vulva?
Even so, there are two types of Pyometra "Open Pyometra" (where discharge is obvious) and "Closed Pyometra" when it isn't. Of the two, the closed one is even more dangerous.
Don't be afraid if it is. Just get her surgery done, and she will probably need IV fluids and antibiotics too. My dog had this last year, and she is an older dog, and she came through just fine.
She has been sick a couple of times, you mean she threw up?
This may or may not be normal. Are there any other symptoms? Does she have a temp? Is she eating and drinking?
I would ask why you haven't had her spay. It would be better for her health in the long run.
