9 Month Shephered Cross Not Eating

Hi There,

Our 9 month old German Shepherd/Black Lab cross has really slowed down eating in the past week. He normally would eat two large bowls per day, but now he's maybe eating half a bowl. He still takes treats, and drinks water and his bowl and urinary functions are still pretty normal. His behaviour hasnt changed either for the most part. He's still a happy, active pup. But I am worried about the eating...after a couple of days we tried some new food and he still has little interest. This morning he threw up and then about an hour later he ate a whole bowl - the first time since Saturday. We have an appointment tonight @ the vet, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any insight as to what may be causing this...

Thank you! :)

Yes, glad you are taking him to the Vet also.  His lack of appetite could be from any number of causes.  I don't know what food you are feeding but it may be too much and should probably be split into 2 or 3 meals a day, esp since he is still a puppy.  I have a Greyhound and Greys usually eat 3-4 cups of food a day, depending on the food being fed.  Perhaps you dog is disinterested in the food you are feeding since he is taking treats and drinking water.  You might try another food (get a small bag to mix with you are feeding now for a couple of days) and see if that stimulates his appetite or try adding a couple of Tlbs of canned and see if that helps.  Hopefully, the Vet won't find anything major going on.

Hello & welcome....How much does your guy weigh? Two LARGE (How large is large?) bowls sounds like way too much to be feeding him....If your going by what's written on the bag, it's always much too high...They want to sell you more food!

I'm glad your taking him to the Vet before the long weekend.....Have him checked out & if they find nothing wrong, I'd say your overfeeding him......He may not like his food, either....What do you feed?

If this guy eats only once a day, try splitting his meals into twice a day and cut back on the amount......Let me know what happens.......Take care, Karla
