Angel Glow and Dry eyes..KCT

I was giving my little 1 year old Maltese/Bichon Angel Glow for his eye staining. (for about 8 months or so) He developed dry eye. One morning he woke up and could barely open his little eyes.  Took him to the vet.  Treatment worked and he is now ok.  I give him "idrops" in his eyes daily though.
Could Angel Glow, somewhat like Angel Eyes, have caused this or is it just a malady of this type dog?
Thank you.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) or Dry Eye, is prevalent in some breeds.  Bichons are one such breed.  Angel Glow and other products like it are simply used to remove undereye stains in white and light colored dogs and have no connection to KCS.

KCS occurs when the lacrimal (tear) gland stops working and the eye no longer has its own system of irrigation.  The animal develops a thick, ropy mucus as the body attempts to provide a substance to protect the eye, but it doesn't work and eventually dark pigment infiltrates the eye causing gradual blindness.  Cyclosporine is actually an anti-rejection drug that is given to transplant patients to help prevent them from rejecting the transplanted organs.  It sets up a false immune system so that the body doesn't recognize that it has an organ from another body in it.  When it is used to treat KCS, it works by jump-starting the lacrimal gland back into action so that it once again produces its own tears.  The main thing to remember with it is not to stop using it when you see great improvement, because as soon as you stop, the lacrimal gland will also stop again, and the eye will gradually revert back to the condition it was in before you started using the drops and will eventually continue to get worse and worse until the animal is blind.  So once you start the medication, it's imperative to continue to use it so that the lacrimal gland continues to work correctly.
