Arthritis

My Golden Retriever Shane has Arthritis and I have been giving him Glucomiasone it helps a bit but not enough.
I have some Cosequin powder left over from horses and I was wondering how much I should give him to try it for a while and if it would help him.
And what is the latest treatment out there now.Love this boy and want to make him feel as well as he can.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

I don't post often, but I do read here a lot, and I have grown very fond of many of you.  Your knowledge, compassion, and commitment is inspiring.

My dog has been suffering from arthritis too.  I had him on Rimadryl for a while and it really helped but I was afraid of the side effects so I switched to glucosamine.  I was buying pet formulas and it did seem costly, and didn't have much of an effect.  I had no idea that human grade was exactly the same thing, though less expensive!!  I've just ordered human glucosamine and for good measure some MSM.  I'll be sure to come back and let you know how it worked for my Bucky.

But mostly I'm writing to thank you all for wonderful, compassionate, advice.  I learn something every time I visit here.  Thank you.

Carol

Oh make sure that the Vet is experienced in the op ....Oscar had it 5yrs ago and if it is not done properly the nerves can grow back. The Vet who did it was a small country vet who did a speciel course on it and my Vet recommended him, he was so right.

I was giving Shane glucosamine forte 1500 one human dose a day 1500 upped after a month to two a day helped maybe a bit but worried I was giving him too much and not much result.
He was very active in his younger years and still tries to be.sneaks off to the dam and when he comes back into a hot shower with me as he seizes up and takes a long while to get up so swimming not so good.

He is free of hip dysplasia  and it is arthritis and getting more severe do not like anti inflammatories as seen what it does to our Racehorses and humans.

This Cosequin has the same ingredients as you are giving to misty and I gave Shane a teaspoon of it..... the next day first thing he was moving better but wore off as day went on not worried as it will build up in system.

Each scoop 3.3 g contains 1800  of Gluco...   and 600 of Chron...and instructions state
To lower dose each month to find individual maintinence leval that is for horses.

But dogs should be no difference.Have about 350 grams of it left over from horses it states should be given morning and night. So how much morning and night

Shane is quite a big guy he weighs about 90Ibs
But not overweight as such and eats only as much as he feels like never worried about food, only where I am, as I must be there when he eats.... yea I know.... but he thinks he is human and responsible for me ever since I went through a lot of trauma and he became my rock..... a truly amazing dog .

MSM is methylsulfonylmethane!  Probably why it goes by msm lol!  You can get it at drugstores in the supplement section, or in better pet shops. The human grade is the cheapest.  You can give as a capsule or just dump it on the food.
Hope it helps!

What dose of Glucosamine are you using for him? Reason I ask is my Misty used to get what I believe was arthritis in her right hind leg (it was broken once and the vet said she would likely develop arthritis in later years...well it seemed she was doing because she would sometimes limp slightly and 'hitch' that leg a bit in cold damp weather)
So I started her straight away on the maximum dosage for her weight of both Glucosamine and Chondroitin (That is 500mg Glucosamine and 200mg Chondroitin for her weight which is 28lbs)
I asked the vet could I use Human grade pills. He said yes the substances are exactly the same. The human ones are much cheaper than veterinary ones!
So I bought a huge pack of the pills at reduced price for bulk buy. They were already the measured dose of 500/200 combined in one tablet. So she gets 1 tablet a day, and has done since a year last Spring.
(A dog twice her weight would get 2 tablets....etc)

Well the feedback on that is it took only about a week to take effect with her, and she has not limped on that leg even ONCE in that time. No matter how damp or cold the weather is. All I can say is it worked wonders for her.
I was just curious as to whether you give your dog the maximum dose of both Glucosamine and Chondroitin, for his weight?

Thanks for the advice what is MSM   ?? it sounds like a weed killer or someone into certain sexuel preferences (.In Aus that is) lol..

My Clumber Oscar was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at two also pretty bad on both sides to have a hip replacement was going to cost about six thousand dollers which was a bit of a shock.

But there is another op that only cost us twelve hundred and that consisted of cutting the nerve on each side of hip that was five yrs ago and no more problems,he walks with a rolling gate but he is in no pain at all and no arthritus ,a hell of a lot cheaper and really successful.

Just a thought as your dog is still young and over time it will get worse but op is so much better when young.

Look into it anyway.

We just found out that are 2yr old male Rowan has hip dysplasia and arthritis vet put him on dasuquin w/msm and told us to use one of the following omega mint, welactin, or salmon oil.We feel the same way as you and will try anything to help but any suggest will also be appreciated not sure what will help  and what is the best.He was just dx so he has not been on the above very long.
Vet suggested to walk him 2x aday for 10-15 min on treadmill or to swim for the same amount of time vet said to get a special foam bed and said massage and acupuncture for dog helps if he will sit for ,he will not so that out. Sorry not much help, but in the same boat on what to do to help him feel better.

Cosequin is glucosamine + chondroitn sulfate, probably similar to the product you have been using (just more expensive!).  From what I can tell, one level scoop of powder would probably be the equivalent to slightly more than the cosaquin for dog dosage of 3 tablets for 50-100lb dogs.
You may want to try adding MSM, its a natural anti-inflammatory and pain reliever.  You can give capsules, powder or there are a variety of treats on the market containing it as well.  I take it and so does my 13yr old Pumpkin.
If you want to go w/traditional medicine (you can do both, Pumpkin does w/the full approval of her vet)  they usually prescribe NSAIDS starting w/Rimadryl and then progressng to Metacam if the rimadyl isn't enough.
Good luck!
