At home care for dog with a fractured shoulder

My 7 month old puppy was running with the kids on boxing day and fractured one of the fine bones across his shoulder blade in 2 places.  He is being treated by the vet, has a full cast on, and is on once per evening pain relief medication and is going to be reviewed by the vet in 7 days....  I am trying to keep him as still as possible and he is with me most of the day, laying at my feet.  He is obviously in a lot of pain and seems very sad.  Being a puppy he is dying to play and tries to hop along being me or the kids when we entire out of the lounge room.  Is there anything else I can be doing to help my poor boy, or to make his life more comfortable or enjoyable while we wait for the fracture to heal??
