Blood found in labrador pee

Blood found in labrador pee

Just yesterday, my 2yr old mixed lab urinated with blood, it happened yesterday afternoon, twice. The blood was not mixed with the urine but it wasn't a large amount. It smelled worse than his usual pee. We observed his urine last night until today and it was back to normal, no blood no foul smell whatsoever. Is this normal cause I'm not sure if he's ill or not. He seemed fine when urinating but he doesn't seem to be as energetic as usual. Although he does not seem that lethargic either. I don't know if I'm just paranoid or he's not really his usual self.

I'll be taking him to the vet this weekend but I want to know ASAP if finding blood in urine is fatal or urgent. Please help me. :c

Hello & welcome.....No, this is not normal....Blood for anywhere is NOT normal!  Strong odor & blood in urine is classic of a UTI. (Urinary Tract Infection). These are very painful and can only get worse.....Before you go to the Vet, try to collect a urine sample to take with you....This will save you the time, stress, and money of your clinic trying to collect one.....

The sample will be evaluated for bacteria.....Oral Antibiotics are given for treatment.....A followup visit is a must, to make sure the infection has cleared.....If it continues, it can also infect the bladder and kidneys, which you don't want....

For collecting urine, use a tin pie plate, soup ladle, plastic bowl, etc. to catch the urine....Then pour it up in a clean sterile jar or thick baggie.....If you catch it the night before your appointment, you must refrigerate it. The fresher the better.......

Again, this is a very painful condition, but also a common one.......Have him evaluated as soon as you can......Good luck & let us know how he's doing.........Karla

No doubt this IS a urinary infection. But he could possibly have bladder stones too. You could discuss this with your vet.

I am sorry about the website not showing up for you. But, while you were waiting for other replies, I hope you took some time to do a search on causes of blood in a dogs urine. Here is some information I found for you.

As Karla mentioned, Urinary tract infections are the most common cause of blood in the urine. The infection may be in the kidneys, bladder, or urethra (the tube through which urine flows). Dogs and cats with urinary tract infections will usually urinate much more often than usual, and they may have fevers as well.

In male dogs, blood in the urine may mean that the prostate gland, has become infected. Dogs with an infected prostate gland typically have a swollen penis and testicles.

Pets that have gotten into harmful substances such as rat poison will sometimes have bloody urine. (Other signs of poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, or restlessness.) In addition, a bite from an infected tick can cause an infection called babesiosis, which destroys red blood cells. The body gets rid of the damaged blood cells by filtering them through the kidneys, which turns the urine red or brown.

And as Ginger mentioned, bladder stones are also a possibility.

Please try to get your dog in sooner that this weekend. If you cannot get the dog in before then, perhaps you could at least collect a urine sample at home as Karla suggested, and drop it off at the Vets in the morning.
The sooner you can have the urine tested, and your dog evaluated, the better.
Please keep us informed.
Connie

Just out of interest, what was that word in your website link, the word after the "www"? spell it out with dashes in between the letters like t-h-i-s. Because this is a family site, some words get asterisked out, like b-i-t-c-h etc! And some words are deemed "inappropriate" even though they might seem quite innocent words in context.

Oh weird, I can't think THAT was a rude word!.....Usually it's fine to post links to websites. I've done it lots of times, so have others...
I'll try to post that link and see what happens:

It worked! That was strange.....maybe you did some typo that spelled out a rude word!

Thanks Ginger...!
It couldn't have been a typo, because it was a copy and paste...after I posted, I reviewed my post, and the entire link was there. When I came back to this post, several hours later....the first part of the link was asterisked...so I don't know what happened...anyway...
I am glad yours showed up with no errors.
Thanks for the information on the use of hyphens...I will try to keep that in the back of my brain for future use.
Happy Holidays...Connie

It also could be Kindey Stones. My Jack had them at only 6 months.
Hope you let use know the results. We all care about dogs especially
on here, so it's always nice to know regardless, if they are positive
or negative results, it helps us all to learn.
